Name Unknown (A New PrC)

DogBackward

First Post
Ok, first things first, I have absolutely no idea what to name this thing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, i just can't think of anything that fits.

That said, "this thing" is the result of some random thoughts, and I honestly have no idea where the inspiration came from. The basic idea is a solid, defense-based warrior who gains his defensive abilities reactively. If you hit him with a sword, he becomes more resistant to swords. Hit him with a fireball, he becomes resistant to fire. That sort of thing.

Anywho, here it is:

[sblock=Class Features]Combat Reaction
Your body reacts to protect itself when subjected to attacks, temporarily erecting various forms of wardings to prevent further harm. Whenever you are successfully struck with certain effects, you gain a benefit, which increases each time you are attacked with the same effect. The bonuses gained are cumulative per attack you suffer, but your total bonus gained in any of the five defenses cannot exceed the listed limit. The benefits gained from these abilities last for one round per class level.

Natural Armor
Whenever you take damage from a physical attack (any attack dealing Slashing, Piercing or Bludgeoning damage), you gain a +1 bonus to your natural armor. The limit for this bonus is 5 +1/2 your class level.

Energy Resistance
Whenever you take damage from an energy-based attack, you gain Resistance 5 against the same energy type. The limit to this bonus is equal to 5 points per class level.

Saving Throws
Whenever you are subject to any effect that requires a Fortitude saving throw, you gain a +1 bonus to all Fortitude saves. The limit to this bonus is equal to 3 +1/2 your class level.

Damage Reduction
Whenever you take damage from a physical attack, you gain DR 1/-. The limit to this bonus is equal to your class level.

Spell Resistance
Whenever you are subject to a spell that can be negated by SR, you gain SR 5. The limit to this bonus is equal to 10 +2x your class level.

Tough Soul
Whenever you make a successful Fortitude save against a spell that has an effect on a successful save (such as Disintegrate), you suffer no ill effect on a successful save. This essentially works like Evasion, but only for Fortitude saves.

Stand Tough
When you are subject to an attack that normally allows a Reflex save to reduce the effects, you may instead use a Fortitude save. You gain no benefit from your Tough Soul ability when using Stand Tough, however.

Instant Reaction
You now gain the benefit of your Combat Reaction abilities just before the attack that triggers them. Your body anticipates the coming attack, reacting instantly to protect itself.

Stand Strong
You may now use your Tough Soul ability in conjunction with your Stand Tough ability, negating all damage on a successful save.

Accellerated Reaction
When one of your Combat Reaction abilities is triggered, you may choose to force the reaction to extend to its full normal limit as an immediate action. You gain the maximum benefit from the raction ability that was triggered, but the benefit only lasts one round. When the benefits fade, you are Fatigued until the end of the current encounter.

Lasting Reaction
Your Combat Reaction abilities linger much longer, staying in effect for 1 minute per class level. You do not use this increased duration when you use Accellerated Reaction, however.[/sblock]

This is a pretty cool class. :)

The prerequisites look painful, which is good: This prestige class is strong.

"Instant Reaction" does not appear on your class features table.

I can't think of a name for this class, but "Chameleon" comes to mind. (Though the WotC book Races of Destiny already has a prestige class called Chameleon. Incidentally, If you could get levels in both, your character could pretty much do anything. :))

Looks like it corresponds to "Forced Reaction" in the table.

Nice class. Survivor springs to mind as a name. Or perhaps Borg. ;)

Oh, uh... yeah, actually. Forced Reaction had originally been the ability to activate a Combat Reaction actively, instead of waiting for the enemy to hit you, but I decided that was too un-thematic. This class only works if you're being attacked.

Thanks for the name suggestions. I'm gonna keep thinking... I want a name that lets you know the specifics of the class. I just want someone to be able to read the name and say "This class does good stuff when people hurt you."

I dunno if that's possible without having a terribly clunky name, but I'm hoping.

Neizscheian -- "That which does not kill me, makes me stronger."

Battleforged -- "Striking me is like folding iron -- you only sharpen the blade of my resolve!"

Adaptive Adept or Adaptable Survivor -- "Hit me with your best shot first, because your second will bounce off."

Cheers, -- N

I like the sound of Adaptive or Adaptable something... I'll work on it, thanks.

And that first one reminds me of a button a friend of mine used to have. It said "That which does not kill me better run really, really fast."

I dunno, I always liked it...
