I just watched a 9-minute clip of Narnia on the Disney Channel, and it felt very... flat. Yes, there are stunning visuals (griffons, centaurs, satyrs, minotaurs and other DnD staples). Yes, the kids walking around with bows and shields strapped onto their backs was very reminiscent of the DnD cartoon. But it felt so... hollow. I couldn't bring myself to be moved by it. Certainly not to the extent of LotR (mind you, I only read LotR a few months before the movies were released).

A nine minute clip drawn from the middle of a movie is a poor judge of dramatic character for a movie. The initial pre-release clip of Fellowship of the Ring (the fight with the cave troll in Moria) was very flat when unmoored from the context of the rest of the film.

The biggest thing people should remember is that this is not LotR. About the only thing this story and the LotR story have in common is that they are set in a fantasy environment with some Christian underpinnings. The Narnia books are much more kid-focused than the LotR books, even more so than The Hobbit. They are, effectively, tales written to give kids a basic primer on Christian theology in a manner that they would find enjoyable. That the movie made from the Narnia books feels different than Tolkien's work is unsurprising. That it might seem flat to some is also unsurprising - the story and the style is much more aimed at children than adults.

As for the tiger thing, Storm Raven, it was not a criticism to the movie or the author. It's just a comment, since tigers are my favorite animals (and my Chinese sign). This is a reason why I liked White Wolf's Bastest so much. The werelions (Simba) were brute savages and the weretigers (Khan) were honorable paladins.

Lions already have an established position in the Narnia stories, as do Leopards (from later books). That leaves Tigers for the bad guys. Just circumstance really.

I LOVE WOLVES, have t-shirts, poster, pictures, and a huge tapestry....WAHHHHHH!!!!

HERE BE SPOILERS, EH?

The 9-minute clip was rather more of a super-trailer, since it began with the Nazis bombing London, then the parents sending their kids to the countryside (where families were encouraged to shelter the kid refugees), then moved to the finding/crossing of the wardrobe, the meeting with a satyr and a beaver. Several scenes followed, including (as it appeared) Aslan giving himself to be sacrificed by the White Witch before the big battle, the several battle scenes, then the White Witch staring at the screen mumbling "it's not possible..." (echoing one of the girls' line when crossing the wardrobe), then Aslan appearing in roaring good shape.
