BTW, what number to subtract from the druid level in order to find out what line to look up the animal companion's abilities on (by the RAW)? ;)

Is it...

a) (Level - X)
b) X
c) -X

X is 6 for example in '7th Level or Higher (Level –6)'.

??

Here are some quotes to help with answering the above:

Subtract the value indicated in the appropriate list header from the character’s druid level and compare the result with the druid level entry on the table to determine the animal companion’s powers.

A druid of sufficiently high level can select her animal companion from one of the following lists, applying the indicated adjustment to the druid’s level (in parentheses) for purposes of determining the companion’s characteristics and special abilities.

7th Level or Higher (Level –6)

I voted no based on the quotes in the first post because I see it calculated as DL+3, then use the chart. However, DL+3=DL for a straightclassed druid because it cannot go beyond CL.

Correct me if I'm wrong, though, but maybe it would work for, say, a drow druid? It would give him +1 level to work with due to LA.

b) of course.

It is crystal clear that the designers intended to absolutely disallow a straight 9th level Druid from having a 10HD Wolf. It is entirely ridiculous to suggest they thought it would be just fine for the same Druid to have a 10HD Dire Wolf while limiting the character to an 8HD Wolf.

No. By the intent of the designers.

This matches my opinion exactly.

Part of the level is the extra tricks, which is an oft overlooked aspect of the animal companion. It's a more powerful creature that is not as well trained.
