Nazareth Awakened - Chapter 02: Wives of Solomon

Harper, Thyrsus mage

[section]
Harper wonders what the hell Agnasci did here; or maybe it was Penrose trying to save his student but that didn't seem like Penrose's way. He grips the doorframe and looks around into the bathroom. Water flows up, the shower curtain falls upwards, so Harper looks up. If he sees Agnasci he'll move into the bathroom.

Holding her pistol in the two-handed shooter grip her instructor had lectured her on, Chance lines up the barrel with Mad Dog's retreating back...and can't pull the trigger. There's a thousand reasons that might be, but in the end only one matters.

So instead, on sheer instinct when she feels Law's spell, she concentrates on a spell of her own; inviting random chance to take a hand in bringing about the Mad Dog's downfall.

(OOC - Casting Winds of Chance, Fate 1, to invite misfortune on Mad Dog as he flees. The hope is that, with Law's decay spell on his tires, the misfortune will increase the odds of something bad happening that makes that tire go out. :))

It's very dark in the bathroom, only faint light penetrating the thick curtain of water moving in both directions in the bathroom doorway. Harper pokes his head through it and immediately feels his stomach churn as the top half of his body begins to feel the effects of the reversed gravity. Water cascades from the tub up to the ceiling where it's pooling and churning. A bald and morbidly obese biker is sitting in one corner of the ceiling, upside-down from Harper's perspective. His eyes are closed and he's clutching himself in his huge arms while he blubbers and cries, the water up to his heaving belly. Beside him is a black shape in the dark water - a body, arms pinned at its sides. There are spells stacked on the figure and Harper knows it's Agnasci. Harper tries to step as carefully as he can into the bathroom but he's swept up in the whirlpool of gravity and flung against the ceiling with a SPLOOSH. A moment later he's crouched in the water beside Agnasci, who seems to be in chains. With a bit of effort Harper manages to pull the drowning mage's upper body above the surface of the water.

Back on the street Mad Dog continues to power away from the scene, now almost 90 yards between himself and the Tahoe. He reaches the end of the street at what the others know to be a small park and prepares to round the corner.

Chance has one shot to get a spell off before Mad Dog is out of sight around the corner.[sblock=Spell: Winds of Chance]Gnosis 1 + Fate 1 = Success with 1 success
Chance successfully casts Winds of Chance[/sblock]Her spell fires successfully. All she can do now is cross her fingers.

Law sprints through the yard, gun in hand, and into the house. He hops in through the watery doorway after Harper but no amount of bracing prevents him from crashing to the ceiling in an undignified heap beside the other three.

There's a fluttering of wings from just above Chance and she looks up in time to see Crow passing overhead in Mad Dog's direction before vanishing among the darkness once again.

With Mad Dog about to be out of sight and Agnasci saved from drowning I'll tentatively end combat for now. People can act freely. We may re-enter combat as the situation dictates.

Law shakes the water from his face and runs a hand through his hair.

"Agnasci you sonuvabitch, what the hell is going on? By the way this is going to suck."

With that Law will begin dragging Agnasci out of the bathroom.

"Someone call Faye and let her know that we found Agnasci and to have Penrose change the gravity in there back to normal."

Once out in the hall again Law will try and get Agnasci's restraints off.

Chance lowers her gun as Mad Dog speeds around the corner. She marks which way he went, checks to make sure her safety is on, and stuffs it in her hoodies pocket as she runs up to the house and goes inside.

The magical display has her a bit razzle dazzled, and even as she calls out, "Guys, is Agnasci okay?" she's also casting out her senses; working with her knowledge of Time to understand magic by how it alters and influences it.

(OOC - Casting the Time mage sight spell, and scrutinizing the gravity magic)

Harper, Thyrsus mage

Harper sees Law start to drag Agnasci through the door of the bathroom and stops him. He yells over the torrent of water, "You go first and I'll pass him through. Looks like he's had the crap beat out of him and that first step is a doozy." Once they get Agnasci through the shift in gravity as gently as possible Harper will exit the bathroom. He'll try to flip over the doorframe (much like flipping headfirst out of the top bunk of a bunk-bed) to land more lightly than his entrance to the bathroom.

While Law tries to unbind Agnasci Harper will go to the big biker face down in the hall, grab him by the collar and drag him out of the house. He'll check to see if the man is alive and if he isn't breathing he'll try CPR.

"Agnasci'll live," he says to Chance as he re-enters the yard.

"Get me out of these," Agnasci barks, struggling against the chains. Louder, he screams, "Get me out of these!" in a voice that would sound panicked, if there wasn't such fury behind it.

"And don't let the fat one go," he growls. "I need him." Agnasci pauses for a moment, then suddenly begins his violent, futile struggle again. "Come on, already!"

Law carefully exits the bathroom.[sblock=Getting into the hall]Law's Roll: Dexterity 4 + Athletics 2 - difficulty 2 = Success with 1 success
Law manages to get out without hurting himself[/sblock]Law collapses against the floor in the hallway, not particularly graceful, but at least not hurting himself. He and Harper work together to try to get Agnasci out.[sblock=Getting Agnasci out]Harper and Law's Roll: Strength 4 + Dexterity 7 - difficulty 2 = Success with 4 successes
Agnasci is ferried across without incident[/sblock]Agnasci is dropped with a splash to the hall floor alongside the motionless BR. Harper tries climbing out next.[sblock=Getting into the hall]Harper's Roll: Dexterity 3 + Athletics 1 + good plan 1 - difficulty 2 = Success with 1 success
Harper manages to get out without hurting himself[/sblock]Harper finally falls to the hall floor. Only the particularly obese biker is left in the bathroom. Moments after the three mages have made it back into the hall there's a terrible grinding sound and suddenly the torrent of water from the tub comes to a stop. Whatever ritual the bikers had been performing seems to have come to an end. Gravity remains reversed in the bathroom, but at least the flow of water has been stopped.

Harper attends to BR, turning the man onto his back with a great amount of effort. Chance recognizes him as the one Mad Dog had threatened in her vision of the past. Peeking into the bathroom, she likewise recognizes the bald one - he was there with the other two when the dog was drowned. Harper checks to see if the do-rag-wearing biker is alive.[sblock=Checking BR]Harper's Roll: Intelligence 3 + Medicine 1 = Success with 1 success
Harper thinks the man might not be beyond saving[/sblock]The biker was knocked out cold from his fall and has been face-down in the water. He's not breathing, but he's not dead yet. Harper begins CPR. Each roll to attempt to stabilize BR will take a minute of work. Should he continue emergency life-saving measures the results of the first roll will be posted at the end of the first minute of work.

Chance casts Temporal Eddies and can immediately see a spell on Agnasci and a spell in the bathroom. She concentrates on the gravity-reversing spell, attempting to glean as much information as she can. It goes without saying that the spell is very advanced - even beyond its physics-bending effects its potency has been reinforced, perhaps to prevent it from being dispelled or unraveled by Sleeper witnesses. The spell is the apex of Forces magic, an arcanum none of the four have any level of mastery in, and was cast by an incredibly powerful mage (in mechanics terms, you can tell it was cast by someone with a much higher Gnosis than Chance - at least 5, if not higher). If Chance were ever to scrutinize the caster of this spell she'd be able to connect the two definitively.

Law examines Agnasci's chains. He's been bound competently but nothing he couldn't potentially deal with. The two most obvious options are to have Chance try to pick the padlock holding them together or use death magic to degrade them like he did at the church. If he chooses to go with the latter he probably won't want to do it in the presence of sleepers. It might also be possible to simply help Agnasci wriggle out of them - he's been almost mummified in the chains but with a couple minutes or so of teamwork they'd probably be able to get him out.

Harper, thanks to his empathetic connection to his familiar, is suddenly made aware that the fleeing biker has come to a stop in the middle of the street a few blocks away. Crow is sitting on a nearby bench watching him.

It's been about thirty seconds since the rescuers arrived at the house.

Law watches as Harper performs CPR on the fat biker.

"Do we want that man to survive? The fewer witnesses to what's happened here the better."

With that said Law realizes just how far over the line he has fallen over the past few months since his awakening. He used to be a by the book cop, followed the rules and had no remorse for those who broke them. He was well known for his determination but now everything has changed, the waters have been muddied and the lines have been blurred. He was no longer the man he was and in recent events and in events to come he was unclear of just how far he would go. He needed to make sure the secrets of his new life would remain unknown to others.

With that he shakes his head and deals with freeing Agnasci, dragging him out of sight of the sleepers and casts Decay Object on the padlock, concentrating deeply and clutching the lead coin in his pocket.

Harper looks up at Law in surprise when he suggests that they might not want the fat biker to survive. "No matter what he did to Agnasci, he's still human." Harper works a bit longer on the biker trying to get him breathing again when he glances down the road.

"Crow stopped. The biker that took off stopped a couple of blocks down the road."

He returns his attention to the fat biker and trying to save his life.
