Need hellp with character creation for an intractible DM

Coredump - It means COSMETIC changes. Ever heard of that? Gods, it sounds as if one of my old DM's ruling on weapons would give you a heart attack:

I don't care what you call your weapon. Laser rifle, machine gun, the ultra hot dog of uber damage, whatever. Just tell me what it is based on. Longsword, Shortsword, etc. You want an uber hotdog of ultra damage that has the stats of a longsword? Done. Next!

Yes. The wizard will wait for me to rescue the woman, have a child, and then ping the whole family together into another plane of existence that just happen to be just like the one we left! You are making so much sense.

Yes, I am sure you can. The dragon spirit thing only ate well over 200 9mm rounds, 30 stun rifle shots, 5 grenades and proceeded to massacre half the party. I am sure your WoD character can stop it singlehandedly. Who's the munchkin again?

Fighter/sorceror 2/6 with low hitpoints, Weapon Focus (Shortsword), Two Weapon Fighting, Two Weapon Defense and Blindfight. I am so going to wade into battle. I suppose that is a good way to get killed and roll up a better character. Doesn't make RP sense, but a good excuse.

Again, you seem to like to be painfully "realistic" in a fantasy world instead of just having fun. I pity you.

I wanted help creating a proper character that isn't a grindstone around the party's neck. I liked Thanee's suggestions. I am just hoping that my DM does. YOU, however, have done nothing but moan at me and accuse me of being a powergamer. If you refuse to help with suggestions of what I should do and instead just keep picking up random points and keep saying "You are a munchkin, you are a munchkin", please leave the thread. Name ONE suggestion so far that you have made beyond saying "You are a munchkin. Just live with it, you tool, even if you don't like it".

And yes, that is what he said. Exactly. YOU made an assumption and proceeded to lambast me because of it. Thank you for your "suggestions". Now, leave. I will quit the condescending stuff when you quit being a donkey's rear and actually make real suggestions instead of attacking me with your own assumptions.

Mistwell - I didn't say that either. He wants me to have the Leadership feat because to him it didn't make sense for me to have a Celestial wife that does nothing to help her husband with her knowledge if he is going into danger. "Effective" in my books. I didn't want her to be Celestial, though. Note that I don't get to control her even if I take the feat, ie., she is not a cohort.
I didn't want power. I want to a) play a wizard type, b) make cosmetic changes to my character's physical appearance, c) contemplate using a template.

I also want to play a class as it is without him changing things everytime I turn around.

I behave the same in any game. You didn't know that, but you made an assumption anyway. Thank you for that.

I wanted input on making a character, not you doing the old schoolyard neener neener. You being old doesn't mean you are not a donkey's rear end. You think that your posts here makes me respect you? Think again.

Sounds like a bad game brewing here. But if you are determined to play, keep it uncommitted. He isn't letting you play anything you want to play. I can understand tweaks to the background to fit the gameworld, I do that myself. But I do try to focus on what the player wants to play. I need a consistency with my gameworld, but beyond that, I try to work with the player.

"I am an orphan and I have no friends. I am good at hitting things with a sword." Human fighter with no appreciable backstory. You are 'avoiding anything that interferes with the gameworld'. Fill in the blanks on personality and that sort of thing as you go. If the DM starts adding stuff to the backstory, just point out that he is either making the character or you are. You are cool with him making it, but that runs counter to what he said he wanted. Wait 4-6 weeks when you get to play in somebody else's game.

It isn't a very good solution, but it will keep you from wasting any effort in trying to get a character approved.

Umm folks, could we turn down the aggressive tone here? Caeleddin is new and we know very little about him/her yet. I appreciate that everyone has a passionate perspective on the issues involved, but I do not appreciate that sarcasm is the only way to convey it.

So let's all just step back and make the assumption that the person on the other side of the keyboard is a decent person that you just might have a few things in common with. OK? Please?

Thanks.

It seems that a few of the posts have referred to the term "effective" in reference to the wife. I took it to mean that he had to take a feat to have a wife as backstory. Some of others seem to have taken it to mean that he wants an effective wife. I think that if "effective" was changed to "essentially", then the confusion about that issue would clear up.

You might want to check out some of the psionic classes/abilities if you don't have the PsiHB, in which case you can read up on them here: http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/psionic.html

Sidebar on the left contains topics to navigate through etc (psionics are near the bottom). Pretty much everything from the Psi HB is in the SRD, so knock yourself out ! A Psion might be just what you want if your DM doesn't want you to be a wizard.

BardSteph - I didn't start it and I certainly won't be the first to end it. They can apologise for being aggressive or they can leave the thread and ignore my subsequent posts. I do not care enough about them or their opinions at this time to miss them. I understand that some people hate munchkins. However, 1) I am not in their game, 2) they are beating me up over their own assumptions without regards to facts, 3) they are adding nothing constructive to the thread. They seem to be here only to beat me up without regard to the topic or the facts at hand. I don't take kindly to that. Nor do I take kindly to people that take my tongue-in-cheek comments and twisting it to attack me with. They also seem to think that their age means they can be as much of a donkey's rear as possible and the n00b will just have to sit there and take it. Sorry, this newbie is not going to play ball.

Hosweay - What really happened is that he wants to change my wife to a Celestial. However, that would mean that I would have a wife that would have knowledges of planes, arcana, whatever, and it would be wrong for her to keep quiet about things while her husband goes out to face them. So, she will be giving advice or warnings or whatever, and for that to happen, he wants me to take the Leadership feat. However, she is NOT a cohort (he made that clear also); she is an NPC under his total control. Again, I did not make the decision nor did I have any input in it.

This is mainly because the idea of a little precocious girl with wings is just too cute to give up. I may just throw the entire backstory out and play like BardStephen said and save that backstory for another campaign.

I don't care what their assumptions are with the word, but I find it highly offensive that they would assume something and proceded to beat me up about it. I also found it highly offensive that they made assumptions and then arrogantly came up with the following sentence:
"Suspect away, but all we *know* is that he doesn't want clerics, doesn't want 'too many' wizard/sorcerers, has an issue with half-celestials (or maybe all such templates), and has a weird perception of soulknife."

That is my main beef with them.

Diirk - Thanks. I'll definitely look into it. I assume that they have spells and things like that. What sort of spells would you recommend for a psion virgin player?

I'd say ask the GM to have the wife stay human, no Feat, Aasimar daughter; maybe she has wing-buds but can't fly? :) There seems to be a fluff vs crunch miscommunication problem here; you need to be clear whether the GM is objecting to the background story per se or to the mechanical benefits from Templates. eg IMC I probably wouldn't allow 1/2-Celestial template but I'd allow a character with human stats who had golden eyes and had "child of an angel" in his backstory; ie I'd allow the fluff but not the mechanics.

Think of a psionics as just a differently named magic system and a psion as a sorcerer with a bit more flexibility and you aren't too far off... almost anything you can do with magic you can replicate with psionics but there's a few differences like being able to wear armour with psionics, etc.

Just browse the powers list (also on the SRD) and the class description and it'll all become pretty clear. Any questions about how a few of the mechanics work, feel free to ask on these boards, there's plenty of people that will be willing to help !
