D&D 5E Need help flavoring a troll so it is unrecognizeable - Princes of the Apoc

Just use a completely different monster, stats and all, but swap out one of that monster's special abilities for troll-like regeneration.

Surprised it took to the second page. If you don't want them encountering/recognizing a troll...just use something else...Hill Giants seem to be the popular choice, but you could just go Ogres, Bugbears, heck make is a gaggle of Kobolds!...and let it regenerate and rend.

Make it wear a costume.

Cover it head to toe in furs (they'll probably go looking for silver weapons), wrap it in bandages (although this one will probably get them using fire), shroud it in a robe (they might try dispelling it?).

All of these are great. Troll Variants especially. I didn't want to make it too obscure because we are playing in the Forgotten Realms and trolls are (from the books I have read) fairly well documented. Elemental variants also play extremely well into the theme of the game and if I don't use them soon I will later!
