I am playtesting my new regen rules for the VP/WP system. I would like to make an interesting encounter with a troll. The encounter is a wilderness encounter. The climate is a cold one but not quite boreal. Its late winter, spring thaw. The area and terrain is described as being in transition from Knife-edged rocky ridges with steep ravines covered with a thick coniferous forest, to bleak windsweapt planes with little vegetation other than hearty grass and shrubs. (For all you FR heads out there its Rashemon).
I was thiniking of having the troll sart by throwing rocks and then attacking with a large greatsword. I would like some ice and snow, scrub, coniferous trees. A track back to its lair.
That part I got, but what I need help with is coming up with a twist and a way to arrange the land so it is interesting, usefull and has a few hazards. Basicly somthing that allows for "crafty troll tactics (tm)" that can be countered by "player ingenuity(tm)" or not. I am thinking terrain that gives troll advantage unless players start to use terrain and wits. Also, dressings for the area would help too.
Aaron.
