Need Help Pricing Ironwood Shield/Armour?

How much would it cost to add the Ironwood property to a shield or armour (scalemail)?

The only source for Ironwood that I can find (other than the spell in the PH) is for ironwood fullplate +2 that costs 137,650 gp.

Any ideas on price for the items above?

Flat cost is:
6*11*2000 = 122,000 gp.

However, that would be for an always-on spell which would normally need to be cast once per day. Since ironwood need only be cast once every 11 days, I'd say you'd be fine reducing the cost by a factor of 10, leaving you with a price of about 12,000gp.

Since a druid could just buy dragonhide fullplate instead for the measly price of 3,300-odd gp, I'd say that the above price is STILL too much, and would probably drop it down to 6000.

Sound good?

But then why's the ironwood fullplate so much more? I think the price gets jacked up b/c it allows druids to wear it. But IIRC, the first rule of pricing items is to look at similar items and that fullplate is about as similar as it gets.

Maybe 122,000 is on track. Other magic items don't seem to get a price reduction for using spells with long durations...

Dragonhide is a natural property of the material, ironwood is a continuously functioning 6th level spell.. thats why the price difference. There's also a big difference between the two in an antimagic sphere.

Your best bet is to simply make yourself some wooden plate mail and cast ironwood on it once every 11+ days ;)

Actually.. Eberron has a couple of new special materials including a wood armor material (Darkleaf Armor I think they called it... basically alchemicaly treated darkwood and some other leaf like materials). Basically it is similar to mithril but is a little different (not quite as good, armors are considered lighter but the max dex increase and armor check reduction issent as good). I dont recall the pricing off the top of my head either. Anyways Darkleaf Bandedmail Armor would be great for druids as long as you dont have a high dex (I think the max dex was only +2). But Bandedmail has a Armor bonus of +6 so thats not too shabby. Since it counts as Medium armor (instead of heavy) its great for druids.

You're aware that you're making the argument that ironwood should cost more than dragonhide because it's worse, right?

Actually, since there's a continual use item price reduction for spells with durations of 24 hrs or more, wouldn't the cost be:

(6 * 11 * 2000) / 2 = 66000 gp ?

Still too much for subpar armor, I agree, but at least it's a little cheaper. :)

Druids can wear dragonhide full plate just the same.

The price is so much more because it's a 3rd edition item. And someone was a bit of an idiot when they made it, because they didn't just go "oh, wait. +8 bracers of AC are half that price".

There aren't very many magic items that use 1 day/level spells in them...

I wasn't saying that ironwood was better than dragonhide.. just explaining the exorbitant price. Its like enchanting your armour with a continuously running greater heroism. (Well the heroism would be more expensive as its only a 1 rd/level spell, but the point stands).

Thats why I suggested merely casting the spell once ever couple of weeks, saves a whole lot of money ;)
