Need Help with a Puzzle by DM

Hello our DM put the players with this puzzle. We are stuck atm and need some help from fellow players/dm. Here it is.

The players in the group belives that the puzzle is a riddle or some sort because it looked familiar the the last puzzle we got. If you have questions post them and i will reply asap.

Did your DM specifically allow outside help, or are your PC's stuck in some dungeon, with this puzzle representing only one way out? I'd feel a bit uncomfortable ethically with helping someone when I wasn't supposed to.

Ethically? It's a game!!

If ethics came into it, then every smackdown thread ever should be labeled "Unethical," as they provide too much min/maxy help to players.

Not to drag this too far in that direction, but - one can cheat in a game, can't one? And dragging in outside help against a DM's wishes is cheating, the same as if a player opens up his Monster Manual without the DM's permission to check up on a monster's weaknesses. Hence, my "unethical" statement.

Yes it is okay for outside help. The puzzle doesn't have to do with the main plot of the story line. Basically the puzzle is there for the players to do for fun and bonus xp/rewards. We have been working on this for the past two weeks and with very little progress. The only thing we came up with is that the first 17 letters could be the first letters of the puzzle.

In that case...

What does the puzzle look like with the first instance of each of those 17 letters removed from it? It didn't make much sense when I did it, especially since there are not two "W"s in the puzzle.
