This is false. From the ever-lovin' SRD (and the DMG is nearly identical, I believe):

Many magic items offer a bonus on attack rolls, damage rolls, saving throws, Armor Class, ability scores, or skill checks. Most items that add to saving throws, attack rolls, damage rolls, or AC are restricted to a maximum bonus of +5. (Bracers of armor are an exception.) Most items that add to ability scores are restricted to a maximum bonus of +6, and the bonus usually comes in multiples of 2 (+2, +4, or +6). Skill check bonuses do not have a maximum.

So ability bonuses are indeed limited to +6. Skill bonuses were not limited until ELH, when they decided on +30.

This is not just a hindsight comment by a few designers. This is in the rule books.

Oh my god...

18000gp, plus 36000gp for every other skill I regularly use. It's only 162000gp for an item that gives +30 to five skills. Something every rogue should have. This is crazy.

THat's non-epic? What page?

First of all Epic is not a core term, it is an add on expansion that not everyone uses.

However, in the Epic Level Handbook pg 123 it lists what makes an item epic. One of the things is: "Grants an enhancement bonus to a skill check greater then +30".

Which is why most people have a problem with items that give any type of skill bonus. Myself included in that.

IDNHMBWM, but doesn't the ELH list an epic item that grants a +10 bonus to Spellcraft? If I'm remembering right, it was far more expensive than the DMG guidelines would have implied. This would be because Spellcraft bonuses have tremendous implications for epic spellcasting.

Or maybe I'm on crack and no such item exists. I'll have to check when I get home.

I thought there was too, but I didn't see it in there in my scan just now. But there are many things including final price that can make things considered epic, so while the +10 to spellcarft is more mundane, there might be a truely awesome power in there as well.

Found it: Epic Spellcasting. It gives +10 bonus to spellcraft for casting Epic Spells. Do normal spellcraft bonuses not count for casting Epic Spells? Because it seems weaker then an item that just gives +10 to spellcraft all the time.
