Need help with Lycanthropes... fast!

OK. SRD gives rules for creating a Lycanthrope...

"Alternate Form (Su): A lycanthrope can shift into animal form as though using the polymorph spell on itself, though its gear is not affected, it does not regain hit points for changing form, and only the specific animal form indicated for the lycanthrope can be assumed. It does not assume the ability scores of the animal, but instead adds the animal’s physical ability score modifiers to its own ability scores...."

"Abilities: All lycanthropes gain +2 to Wisdom. In addition, when in animal form, a lycanthrope’s physical ability scores improve according to its kind, as set out in the table below. These adjustments are equal to the animal’s normal ability scores –10 or –11. A lycanthrope in hybrid form modifies its physical ability scores by the same amount."

Name Animal Form Animal or Hybrid Form Ability Modifiers Preferred Alignment
Werebear Brown bear Str +16, Dex +2, Con +8 Lawful good
Wereboar Boar Str +4, Con +6 Neutral
Wererat Dire rat Dex +6, Con +2 Chaotic evil
Weretiger Tiger Str +12, Dex +4, Con +6 Neutral
Werewolf Wolf Str +2, Dex +4, Con +4 Chaotic evil
Dire wereboar Dire boar Str +16, Con +6 Neutral

I have edited the insignifigant parts. This seems to give two distinct methods for adjusting a lycanthrope's statistics based on his creature:

The first paragraph says to "add the base animal's physical stat modifiers.

The second says to take the base animal's score, subtract 10 or 11 (whichever will give you an even number), and add it to the creature's stats (while in animal or hybrid form). The chart that you see here follows the second method and is the one that I am going to use. However, I would like to know about what seems like an indescrepancy. Why the two different methods? Is there a base stat range for all animals which is adjusted according to type (basically, each animal typw would have modifiers to its stats)? Why does it even give what seems to be two different stats? Why are they phrased so differently? Thanks!

Hi!

IIRC, one of the entries refers to the lycathropes premade and edited in the MM and the other one refers to self-made lycanthropes. The second entry gives you guidelines to create lycanthropes not mentioned in the various MMs. I.e., if you want to make a wereswan ;), take the "bird" from the animal appendix and substact the numbers as suggested.

Hope this was of help!?

Kind regards

They are using two different ways to say the same thing.

The base animal physical stat modifiers are the adjustments from the base 10/11 stats.

The second sentence tells you haw to determine what those modifiers are. If the stat is odd, subtract 11, if it is even, subtract 10, the remainder is your stat modifier.

As Scharlata indicates, this is so you can create your own were-types. Last December, I helped somebody craft a were-panther. You could do the were-shark, were-badger, were-hyena, etc.

I don't believe this is an actual word. "Discrepancy" or "inconsistency" are probably the words you're looking for.

This post not meant to be a slam, but merely a note on word-usage. I like to be told when I'm using a word incorrectly, or a word that does not exist.
