Need math help ... how high can my monk jump?

First Post
Okay, I've got a new monk character I'm creating. Here's my stats for him:

Str: 20 (+5)
Ranks in Jump: 5 (+2 synergy for tumble = 7 total)
Ring of Jumping: +30
Boots of Striding/Springing: Doubles movement (and possible +10 to skill, if it stacks.. I'll assume not)

Movement rate = 50 *2 =100

Total Jump Bonus: +42

So let's say he takes a standing jump into the air and rolls a 10. Total of 52.

You jump 2' up and then 1' for every 8 points over 10.
2 + 5 (8*5=40)= 7 feet up.

But since his movement is 100 and these are for 30 feet, we need to muliply the number by 3.33.

7*3.33 = 23 feet 4 inches.

Is that about right? My math is usually pretty crappy. But I hope it is, as I like the idea of jumping 23 feet in the air from a standing position. It's totally Matrix.

Thanks! :D

The boots stack with the ring, since one gives an unnamed bonus and the other a competence bonus. So you'd beable to jump even higher!

:D

... mind you, by the time you're doing this, it might be a bit overshadowed by how everyone else will have winged boots or equivalent powers of flight, so they could just fly up.

:(

High-level D&D is, for all practical purposes, wuxia. Everyone flies and teleports, the characters can trash anyone whose kung fu isn't as good as theirs, and magic is spectacular. A corollary is that characters whose schtick revolves around such mobility-based stunts as are seen in wuxia movies can end up being shaded.

Hong,

You're probably right. My dream of being able to jump in the air and stun a passing Wizard will probably be overshadowed by the rest of the party flying up there.

"Hey, Jumping Monk ... we'll call you when we need you."

Still, my DM doesn't give out an overabundance of magic items (although we seem to have plenty), so perhaps not everyone will be flying around.

Would you recommend I ditch the Spring Attack and Ring of Jumping and go for wings of flying and Cleave? Probably more powerful, but not what I had in mind for the character.

I believe that your running speed only multiplies the distance you travel on a running jump.

Hmm... it doesn't say that on the SRD:

The distances listed are for characters with speeds of 30 feet. If the character has a lower speed (from armor, encumbrance, or weight carried, for instance), reduce the distance jumped proportionally. If the character has a higher speed (because the character is a barbarian or an experienced monk, for instance), increase the distance jumped proportionally.

But perhaps its in the errata... in any case, it does make sense and might make a good house rule.

I should have said.. "might make a house rule... for a weak DM!"
:D

Actually, I should make a distinction, I don't like house rules that change a stated rule... but I think they're fine for rules clarifications when a rule is ambiguous.

Sadly, in our game most of Tom Cashel's house rules involve things like: The DM never pays for pizza. :)
