Need some big help

Some of you may remember me off the WotC boards a couple years back (after reading up on their current releases, i decided to avoid any future affiliations with them and posted here instead) and/or this one also...

anyway, to make a long story short:

I pretty much took a year break from roleplaying when it affected my studies too much. I want to get back into it.

a) I would appreciate someone giving me the rundown on good sci-fi releases in the past year, 3rd party primarily, as I'm still familiar with all of WotC's garbage after reading amazon.com reviews for half an hour... a homebrew that I will continue is a heavy crossbreed of a near-Wheel of time (only good WotC product) magic system with a post-apocalyptic sci-fi setting - there is definitely potential in the setting for deepspace-faring adventure... eventually.

b) My girlfriend is very much into writing, and I'm trying to get her into rpgs... reccommendations? I was thinking of getting her into Mutants and Masterminds first, just because of its simplicity.

c) I've never been one for the mundane... and am looking for a fitting online game to 'wet my feet' yet again. Something original, or a stargate campaign, whichever. I'm an experienced roleplayer and would make a very good addition to any online party.

As a guideline, these are the books i have with me now:

Arcana Unearthed
Wheel of Time
Star Wars rcrb
Mutants and Masterminds
Dungeon Master's guide (3.0, f**k spending money to buy 3.5)

I'm ordering Charles Ryan's ultra modern firearms book (found it for 13$!!!!) and was thinking about some mecha stuff...

any help is appreciated,
cheers,

If you don't want to go the d20 Modern/Future road, and still use d20, one of the sci-fi game released this year is Bulldogs!

You can read the review I made about it here.

Other stuff released (such as Blood & Space II) is generally supplements for d20 Future.

For your g/f, how about the new Storytelling system from White Wolf? With terms like "theme," "mood," "scene," and "story," it's the kind of thing a writer would enjoy. Plus, the dots=dice pool thing is an easy mechanic to grasp.

Green Ronin's upcoming Blue Rose roleplaying game is based more on the fantasy literature of writers like Mercedes Lackey, and it uses the same damage mechanic that Mutants and Masterminds does. So there's that for you, and some more story-based roleplaying for your girlfriend!
