Need some clarification on tanglefoot bags

Does no-one else have a problem with Tanglefoot bags? Do your players use them a lot?

I use them all the time. I have a rod of viscid globs from MaoF, and it gets used all the time. Saves are butts more then not.

Well, the PC's are supposed to win so sometimes I don't have a problem with items like that. I've noticed some people don't like items that make the battle unpredictable.

I've never had a problem, most NPC's can avoid it and if it's a problem I'll fudge the roll so he's just entangled instead of held.

yep

Problem is that the DM can use them, too....

I've found the fastest way to convince my players something is broken is to use it against them.

ie. group of 10 bugbears launch TFB as their first round of attacks.... hehe ouch!

i dont use them in my game now... :)

Well, by a relatively decent level it's not that bad because they can make the reflex save fairly easily.

its not the entanglement part that bothers me.. its the guaranteed 1/2 speed for 10 minutes bit.

honestly what level of spell would you make a touch attack, no save, halves your enemies move speed?

see what i mean :)

Of course I agree with you jgbrowning:) but you yourself gave the reason any DM can use. The fact is it should be hard to find/purchase. It depends as to who are the engineers/inventors in your game world. In my Greyhawk you could only find the stuff in Greyhawk city and it would be an adventure in that! I think thieves would have a great use to "kidnap" the inventor of the stuff and have him turn out the stuff for them. But just because it costs 50gp doesn't mean you can create 100 bags a day. Perhaps the special ingredients while not impossible or even hard to find(to keep the cost down) must be "perfect" specimens. Or maybe it's just that if your "in the know" that you can acquire it for 50gp. I purposefully keep the quanity low and the bad guys are the ones who have it. The good guys might have at most 2 bags of the stuff. It al depends on how you want to angle it. Again I agree it's broken but don't throw it all out:eek: Else you never get to hear yourt players curse:D

actually it would be fairly easy to make as long the ingredients were not that hard to get, and from the 50gp price i'd have to say they wern't..

how can it be easy to make after i just posted how hard it was to make you ask? :)

ring of alchemy +10. ta da! magic to the rescue!
