Need Sorcerer build ideas please

Hey all,

I am getting ready to play in an evil aligned group in a new FR game. I want to play a sorcerer, but have never played any of the arcane spellcasters. We are starting between 5th and 7th level.

I have two great ideas for my Sorcerer, but right now they both have a +7 level adjustment.

1. Raksasha Battle Sorcerer, great abilities and already geared to be a sorcerer once I complete the outsider levels.

2. Ogre Mage Battle Sorcerer, great abilities and already beefed up to be a back up fighter for the party, but primary role would be arcane spellcasting.

Does anyone out there have any other ideas for a sorcerer build? Maybe something with less of a level adjustment but with similar flavor!

Hmm... the problem with these HUGE LA races is, that your sorcerer abilities will suck... simply put, throughout your whole career.

I also don't know (not sure, if that is what you imply, so if not, just ignore this part :D) why people think sorcerers are flavor-less or that flavor must come in the form of cool abilities. Flavor is what you make out of the character and how you explain the character's abilities, e.g. two mechanically completely identical characters could have drastically different flavor. Well, at least that's how I see it.

With that in mind, I would AT MOST look at a +1 or maaaybe +2 LA (including racial HD, that do not count as sorcerer levels), if you really want to play a sorcerer and not some monster with whimpy spells added to its monster abilities, because a sorcerer is defined over his or her spells and these better be appropriate for the total level.

Can't really give you a good suggestion, tho, other than to use feats and spells to make a unique and interesting character.

For a bard (not a sorcerer, tho), there would be a rather good (<-- huge understatement) monster race in the FR Underdark sourcebook (the gloura). It's almost ridiculous what they get for a mere +2 LA. Of course, a bard with the Sublime Chord PrC is almost a sorcerer. ;)

Okay. :D

Anyways, I would strongly recommend to look for some low LA race, since otherwise you simply won't be playing a sorcerer, and that seems to be what you want to do.

Oh, and the gloura wouldn't really work, since it starts out with an ECL of 9. ;)

If you have access to Libris Mortis, there's the Necrpolitan, which is an undead without a level adjustment. (Though the creating process involves lossing a level, so you might start out an actaul level lower. Not as bad as an LA though).

If you wanted to continue the undead theme he could learn lots of necromany spells, and maybe take Spell Focus (Necromancy).

By flavor, I meant a more exotic race than the standard ones!

Maybe not exotic enough, but I played a kobold sorcerer that was a ton of fun. He talked with a really whiny voice, and acted cowardly (I joked that his nickname was "The Hindmost" - a nod to Larry Niven). But he was very effective in combat, so long as no one tried to put him in the front ranks.

Other options:
Speaks rarely, in a low, hissing voice; devious, with a number of charm and/or illusion spells.
Vengeful and bloodthirsty, with lots of damaging spells.

A kobold is a bit weaker than a human, but I like the flavor.

I would think a fey-ri would be a great evil sorcerer.
Look at putting evil templates on a 'normal' race. I'd focus on casting less than combat.
rakshasa are nice, but that's a chunky pay-out.

Any LA for a casting class is going to be really really hard to justify.

Remember, you are trading your highest level class abilities for whatever your racial abilities are. A high LA race can work, but you need to focus on a race with good racial abilities and just use the class stuff for flavor then.

See if you can talk the DM into letting you play a Formian Taskmaster.

Ouch... if you have never played an arcane caster at all, starting at those levels is not the best, however you have at least chosen the Sorcerer over the Wizard. Your 2 ideas are very cool but not feasible for a long time (remember that you should count HD as well, that makes a classless Ogre Mage equal to a 12th level PC, and 14th for the Rakshasa!).

Because you have never played an arcane caster, it may actually be a good idea to be a combat character - or otherwise a skilled character - with a couple of levels of Sorcerer.

That choice usually results in a slightly weak character, but it's definitely playable.

Otherwise go full-Sorcerer, that is not yet so difficult after all since you know a few spell still.

In either case I'd strongly suggest that you take an ECL +0 character in any case, not rather for the loss of spellcasting levels otherwise but for the loss of HD and Hp.

I find the various Draconic Heritage feats in Complete Arcane to be full of flavour - especially if you use it to justify a very striking appearance. Being able to breathe fire, for instance, can make for a memorable sorcerer.
