...and let's not forget Clint Howard. He appeared on the original series as a kid, remember?

Looks like they really have dispensed with the timeline, which I think is great. The Ferengi were first met by the Next Gen crew in the original timeline - there is no way to rationalize around this one. It's an alternate universe Trek. I love alternate universe stories as it is, so a series that is completely an alternate to the timeline we know is fascinating to me.

We also see now that T'Pol is demonstrating some very unfamiliar Vulcan traits - she lied, flat-out, to the Ferengi. She also was acting very playfully angry with the captain. Now, the way to think about this is that perhaps it's because we're seeing Vulcans as they were a couple centuries before the original series. On the other hand, though, that would only be a couple generations to the long-lived Vulcans, so I guess that really couldn't account for it. Is she half-Romulan, perhaps? Whatever the reason, I like it.

But something that can be released into the air that would knock out the entire crew? MmmmmmI don't know...wouldn't they have filtration in the air system?

Why couldn't they have used Orions for this episode? I mean I liked the episode, as long as I don't think about it too much.

You know, like if it was my ship, I would have cracked their computer, found out who they were, checked their navigation logs to see where they came from, scanned every micron of their ship for future ID, got their language from the security scans Trip & T'Pol made, got Dr Phlox to do a complete medical examination, record their DNA (It's all over the ship) and create a species profile from the Captain's chats with the unknown aliens.

Wasn't there a NG episode where Ferengi from Picard's past came back to exact revenge? This would, of course, mean that someone in the "original" timeline had encountered the Ferengi before the Enterprise-D crew....

But I'm not a big Trek-history guru, so I could be mistaken.

The Ferengi you are thinking of was Daimon Bok. His son was killed in the Battle of Maxia with Picard, then Captain of the Stargazer.
He tried twice to get revenge on Captain Picard, in the first season "The Battle" and in the seventh season "Bloodlines".

No laws of time were broken in either episode.

The NG encounter with the Ferengi was the first visual encounter with the Ferengi, prior to the revision in the Enterprise series.

The Ferengi after Picard was angry because his son fired on Picard, and was killed or something....

Someone who is better versed with the series will be along to clear up any mistakes I've made. :)

I had some other things to do and missed the episode. I'll have to catch it on Saturday night. I'm admirably resisting the urge to read this thread until that time. This means people can poke fun of me missing it and I won't know it until Saturday! :D

I can't remember... Did the Enterprise crew ever refer to the "aliens" as "Ferengi?" I don't recall them using the species name:confused:

If they never called them "Ferengi," then the timeline could be somewhat preserved (not that I care. Ent is  enough to throw some continuity out the window) because records of a species called "Ferengi" never existed; only "aliens with large heads and a strange obsession with their ears..."

Also, did you notice how much they wanted gold? GOLD? According to Quark in DS9, gold is worthless, only Latinum is worth anything. Guess that's just the way things change over 200 years.

Latinum only really becomes valuable after the predominance of replicator technology, because it can't be replicated (something unique to do with its molecular structure, I believe). Before that, I guess it's understandable that gold is precious, through out the universe, because it's pretty, but otherwise worthless for much more than decorations (i.e., jewelry) and monetary transactions because of its inherent softness.

Regarding the Ferengi and Starfleet knowing about them, we saw that the Enterprise had security cameras aboard, so there'd be a visual record. I'm also sure that Archer got as much info about them and their race as possible - he does have to report to Starfleet. If not, then the writers have written him as an idiot and Starfleet as a joke. Either instance could well be true, given how TV is, but I doubt it.
