Nercomancers get ALL the love

The truly funny thing of it is that Necromancers are not really that powerful if you go by the PHB.

There really arent all that many great combat spells in the Necromancy school. Threre are a healthy amount of Save or Die type spells, but little in the way of spells that simply cause damage. The best Necro type spells belong to Clerics, but multi-classing tends to severly limit spell casting ability if you try to do it evenly. You end up with alot of spells that while normally effective, tend to be easier to save against.

The natural result of all of this is a slew of custom Necromancer prestige classes, Feats, and abilities in an effort to create an all powerful death lord type.

In the end, it is all quite useless. While being effective in combat is often important for a villian, it takes more then a handfull of high level spells to make a memorable villian.

END COMMUNICATION

The new book by FFG is not for necromancers.......Necromantic Lore is a monster book of just undead plus templates and prestige classes for the undead buggers.

I DEMAND more supplements for Diviners! Abjurers! Conjurors! Pah!
Conjuration, yeah! Who needs dominion over the dead (elementals are far less replusive). There's, what, two energy arrow spells in the entire PH? Certinaly could use a few more of those...

LGodamus is correct that "Necromantic Lore" is a monster book.

On the other hand, according to Game Trade Magazine, Fantasy Flight ARE releasing two books for wizards early this year: "The School of Illusion" (listed for January) and "School of Evocation" (listed for March). Sounds like the start of a "schools of magic" series, so count me in!

(Since I have zero affiliation with FF, please don't hold me to those dates.)

However, despite my excitement, I am a book editor, and as such, it REALLY bothers me that one cover is shown as having "The" in the title and the other is not. Consistency, people! Hopefully it's just an error in the advertisements...)

necromancers

why let a little thing like death keep you from your favorite girl, or from raiseing loyal minions. there is a long history in both fantasy and sci-fi/horror books and movies.

as for why Necromancers are getting more published about them, the answer is simple: Necromancers are just more interesting. As was posted earlier, they are the arch-type villian. but that said, I think what it really comes down to is they are just so much fun to play . . . so I say again "Bring out your Dead!"

And yet Final Fantasy doesn't sell millions of copies because of some guy reanimating his enemies for half a combat. I've always thought conjuring up monsters was cool...

As a follow-up to "Necromancer's Legacy" aka "Thee Compleat Librum ov Gar'Udok's Necromantic Artes", I am unfortunately not concentrating on another school of magic (although I have an evocation based product in the works for LATE 2003), but on psionics instead.

Heh, well, Necromancers have less spells officially than any other school is another reason they 'get all the love' and I am glad for it, since I play them all the time ;)

I say more power to the Transmuters! I shall always remember the day Orstadt of the Blue Light turned a dragon into a frog - and so shall S'mon, who was DMing at the time...:D
