According to an announcement by Ed Stark, WIzards of the Coast plans a bold new marketing strategy to help promote the new revision of the game.

They will make the Player's Handbook collectible. Each PHB will have the same cover and be sealed in plastic. THere are three types of book - common, uncommon, or rare. The common book will have the changes already planned. But the rare and uncommon books will have more flexible rules and more options. Stark explains.

"For example, in the Uncommon book we left Shield and Haste alone, so that players can still use those powers if they get lucky when they buy a copy of the book. A rare book will have even more options, such as a 1st edition fireball that has no damage caps or feats with most of the prerequisites gone."

He said that after the announcement for the collectible Miniatures game, they recieved a ton of feedback. "Fans love collectible things. You never know what you're going to get. Its like slot machinces for gamers!"

If the line is successful, they will consider other collectibles such as the MM or DMG. They've even considered making dice collectable, with one out of twenty d20 having three extra '20s' in place of low numbers.

As far as those fans who don't like the collectable nature of the books, Stark suggested they look at the secondary market. This way they could get exactly what they want, either by haggling with a game store owner or taking a shot at an online dealer.
