New AoO Question

Aluvial

Explorer
A character is standing next to a creature with a reach that is greater than 5' (say 10' or greater).

Does that character provoke an AoO if he just moves away (doesn't run) from the creature and does nothing else?

2nd question:

If a character is in a threatened space and moves away, what actions can he take after moving and NOT provoke an AoO?

Thanks for the help...

1) Yes. Only the initial square is considered 'unthreatened' when a character makes such a move; since he also has to leave a second threatened square, he will suffer an AoO on the move. (Monsters with reach can be a real pain.) Note that this kind of situation can arise under other circumstances. For instance, a character who is orthogonally flanked by to creatures with 5' reach cannot escape without passing through a square threatened by one or the other, and therefore cannot disengage without provoking an AoO.

2) The letter of the rules does not allow exceptions-the only action can be the move. I think most DM's will permit a free action or two here ...

I'm not sure I agree with that. The language on PH p. 126 pretty plainly lays out that this requirement is satisfied whenever you take a double move action.: "since all you do when you take a double move is to move..."

But it doesn't say, "Since all you do when you take a double move is move, and/or speak, drop a weapon, drop prone, ready a material component, cast a quickened spell ..."

I freely admit, however, that ruling the other way is completely stupid, so I'll leave it at that. :D

So how about a list of the viable things you might be able to do after moving form a threatened space without provoking the AoO?

Any free action, I would say. I don't think there are any that provoke AoO.

The basic gist of it is that you can't move out of a threatened space and attack, or cast a spell, or take any standard action without triggering an AoO - barring 5' steps, of course.

Right. My point is that if they don't have to say those things, it must be that none of those things count for this purpose.

I'd also say, that free actions are allowed.

Other than that, only a move or double move does not provoke an AoO, tho.

A regular move does provoke an AoO. This is saying that you still have a std. action left in your round for something else... this use of your turn provokes an AoO.

A double move doesn't provoke an AoO from the square you start in... if you move out of a 2nd square that is also threatened, you do provoke an AoO.

A 5ft. step doesn't provoke an AoO.
