D&D 4E New "Confessions of a Full Time Wizard" - 4e tidbits!

Gotta say, this column has solidified my decision on D&D 4e. I am sure other people love it, but for me, D&D and point buy character creation systems are mutually exclusive. When I create D&D characters I expect to be rolling dice for attributes. If I want to play a point buy fantasy game, I will pull out my GURPS and play that. That little bit of information pushed me from "I am going to continue playing 3e at least until this campaign is over, possibly longer," to "I really don't see how 4e is D&D anymore, I don't think I will bother." It just strikes me as another "let's change it because we can" situation. As I said, I am sure lots of people love the change to point buy. I just don't like it.

Ha Ha, oh wow.
You're kidding right? Change just for changes sake? Most people already play with point buy, those who don't usually roll again and again until they have decent scores. It's not some random change, but another case of bringing corerules in line with how people actually play the game!

For those who still cannot access (or choose not to) I will post the article below. I have bolded the parts that have some 4e mechanics: So, we have:
Magic Missile, and Fireblast - at will powers
Burning Hands - per encounter
Sleep - Daily

Well...
“I’ll take magic missile and fireblast for my at-will powers. Oh! Burning hands for an encounter power, and, let’s see, sleep for my daily.”

It could mean there's just a list of spells, and you pick which spells are at-will, per-encounter, or per-day.... maybe.

Yep.

And really, I can't think of a single RPG from the past dozen years that even *has* a random attribute mechanic. There's probably a reason for that.

Well, point buy isn't in the 3.5 Player's Handbook, so I kinda see her point.

It is in the Dungeon Master's Guide, which is also a core rulebook, so it is not really a brand spanking new revolutionary thing. As others have mentioned in this thread, point buy is quite common.

No biggie, though. I'm sure all styles of attribute generation will be available. It's just amusing to see point buy touted as being such a new development. More of the "3.5 edition sucks, 4e is so awesome" type of promotion, I warrant.

Geez, it says in the very same article that die rolling is still a way to roll characters. I can assure you that i will still be doing that since ive never been a fan of point buy. Wont prevent me from enjoying the game.

You're right, it is a trivial thing to let bother you, but I'm guessing that it's just one more piece of straw on the camel's back for some people....

And I haven't really seen anyone get angry over it....

It usually takes me two hours to finalize a character sheet. Usually because I'm flipping through books, haggling with skill points, scratching my head over weighting the options of this feat versus that feat, going back over spells to decide...

It could even mean they are different depending on which version of a power you choose. An at-will MM might attack AC and do 1d4, while a per-encounter MM attacks Reflex and does 2d6 and the per-day MM auto-hits and does 2d6 to each of up to four targets.

I am not angry about it in the least. I just found it to be one more thing in a laundry list of things I did not find interesting, enjoyable, or fun in what I have heard about 4e. I am glad that this decision by WotC is making a lot of people here happy. I know from personal experience that a large number of D&D players in my area will not be happy with that news. It's not that big of a deal by itself. Add it to the other things, and well, it takes the game in a direction I don't find fun.

To be honest, except for what I read people say here on ENWorld, I have never actually met a person who prefers point buy character creation for D&D. Based on what people say here, I must be in an insular environment. I have met, literally, dozens of D&D gamers since 3.0 came out, and easily thousands since I started playing D&D. Some have used point buy systems; some of them tolerate it; none of them have said they prefer it. Must be a local thing.
