New creature: Angel of Tragedy

gpetruc

First Post
I was considering a new creature for a homebrew world where the world, that was once full of good and happiness, has been suddenly changed by some sort of cataclysm and now there are no gods, nearly no celestials (called angels) and some demons/devils have appeared (they weren't there before the cataclysm)

I'm without the monster book now and so I'll post the general ideas for now and I'll make the stats later.

Angel of Tragedy
Sometimes happens that a celestial creature sees some horrible events take place and is unable to change them; he/she sees Good fall in darkness without any hope of salvation, sees misery and suffering. In this case his/her holy soul might freeze, and all positive feelings abandon his/her heart; only a deep suffering remains.

CR should be about 7

The creature should look like a winged angel, but with a grey color (a bit like a stone statue). It can also appear in an alternative form (humanlike, usually beautifull but sad)

The allineament is true neutral

-> Attacks: the touch of an angel of tragedy deals temporary strenght damage (1d4, fort halves DC 16 ?), that goes off the next dawn. Creatures who are reduced to 0 strenght fall asleep and cannot be awaken until the next dawn
-> Also, it has something like a gaze attack: anyone that looks in his/her eyes is overwhelmed by tragic feelings. Must make a Will save (DC 16 ?) or be unable to do anything (treat as dazed) for 1d6 rounds. In any case it takes a -4 morale penalty to all attacks, saves and checks until the next dawn. This is active also in human form. Evil creatures receive a +2 bonus to saves against this effect
-> Aura of Hoplessness: anybody in a 10ft radius from the angel receives a -1 morale penalty to all attacks, checks and saves. This is active also in human form
-> Protection from Evil: Even if partially fallen, an angel is still an angel, and thus protected from any evil. It is always active as the spell. Can be dispelled, but the angel can recreate it as a free action on his/her next round.
-> Telepathy: An angel is able co communicate with any creature in a 50ft radius that is able to speak at least one language, but can speak only to one creature per round.
-> Curse: anyone deliberatly killing an Angel of Tragedy receives a curse (-4 to all attacks, saves and checks). This is treated exactly as a Bestow Curse spell, except that an evil caster can remove it only with Limited Wish, Wish or Miracle.
-> Angels of Tragedy speek Common, Auran and Celestial.

This shouldn't be a combat opponent but more as a RP challenge (but it can also take part of some combat: for example one of the creatures kidnapped by the evil guys is actually an angel who does not try to escape with her powers, as she has lost any hope in future and so cares very little of what might happen to her).

Suggestions ?

Any stat proposals ? how many HD ?

Would you prefer this to be a template or a complete creature? You could go wither way with it. Using the template, you could have this same effect at varying power levels- a Deva of Tragedy, or a Archon of Tragedy, lets say. Or you could state that the tragedy changes the very metaphysical nature of the celestial, totally changing the physical, and spiritual form.

I would say go with the template. The parts with bold are the ones I suggest, everything else is repeats of your post.

HD: Same as the base creature.
Speed: Same as the character or animal
AC: Same as base creature
Attacks: same as base creature
Damage: same as base creature
Special Attacks: the touch of an angel of tragedy deals temporary Wisdom damage (1d4, Will Save equal to 10+HD+chr ), that goes off the next dawn. Creatures who are reduced to 0 wisdom fall asleep and cannot be awaken until the next dawnand suffer a -2 to all actions do to haunting visions of despair
Also, it has something like a gaze attack: anyone that looks in his/her eyes is overwhelmed by tragic feelings.
Special Qualities: Aura of Hoplessness: anybody in a 10ft radius from the angel receives a -1 morale penalty to all attacks, checks and saves.
Saves: The creature gains a +4 bonus to Will saves, as its despair has rendered its mind immune to most influences.
Abilities: +2 Wis, all others the same
Skills: +4 bonus to sense motive
Feats: Same as base animal

The idea of a template is good (some time ago I was also considering a Fallen Celestial template for celestials who turn evil).

The stats you propose are good, but I'm not sure about the Wisdom damage:
At the beginning I thought about cold damage, and then changed to strenght to make it more effective but less lethal. The idea was that the touch could provide some protection against attacks in combat (touch the attacking beast: it feels it's stenght and fury faint and won't try to kill you anymore)

Creatures who are reduced to 0 wisdom fall asleep and cannot be awaken until the next dawnand suffer a -2 to all actions do to haunting visions of despair
If they are asleep, how can they make checks ?

When they awake. The effects linger after they awake.

The reason I went with wisdom drain would be to simulate the effects of having to suffer from visions of tragedy that the creature instills. Say its touch also brings with it some kind of ennui.
