Rob, that's AWESOME.

And of course this is all for naught as I've found out one of my players isn't really even into Dark*Matter-esque genres. Someday, I'll find a group. Someday. lol.

I think you should at least run it as a one-shot. The player might be pleasantly surprised!

And to throw a new monkey wrench into things...

Have you had a look at Star Wars Saga edition? It is a very streamlined and cool version of d20, and I bet it could easily be adapted for Dark*Matter.

I think you're looking for Complex Skill Checks from Unearthed Arcana:

That write-up is for D&D, but porting it to d20 modern won't be any trouble.

While I might toss that into my D&D game the next time there's a few complicated actions going on, that's not quite the same--Alternity had basically three types of positive outcomes on skill checks: ordinary, good, and amazing (I think those were the descriptors), and getting a different outcome could mean different things.

Like, with putting out a fire, you'd roll some sort of check, and have to accumulate say, like 10 successes. If you got ordinary, you'd get one success, two for good, three for amazing, or something.
