Dragonlance New Dragonlance Novels from Weis and Hickman in 2026

New trilogy focuses on the Solamnic Knight Huma

Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman announced a new trilogy of Dragonlance books titled Dragonlance Legacies with the first novel titled War Wizard.

Tracy Hickman made the announcement on his Facebook page this past weekend:
Just announced at Gencon: Margaret Weis and I will be writing a new trilogy: Dragonlance Legacies. First book: War Wizard

Margaret Weis’s Facebook announcement had a bit more detail:
Tracy and I are pleased to announce Dragonlance Legacies. The story of the legendary wizard, Magius, and his friendship and adventures with the Solamnic knight, Huma. Published by Random House Worlds. 2026.

Weis also answered a few questions giving us a bit more information.
  • Weis and Hickman are writing the books together
  • When asked if this will conflict with pre-existing lore established in Richard A. Knaak’s The Legend of Huma, Weis said “This is our story.”
  • When asked if Hasbro was involved, Weis said “Random House Worlds is the publisher”
  • The omnibus edition of Chronicles will be accompanied by an omnibus edition of Legends as well in 2025.
So far, the only new book officially announced through any publishers is Dragonlance Chronicles: Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Witner Night, Dragons of Spring Dawning omnibus edition coming in February 2025 (pre-order on Amazon through this affiliate link), but it may be several months until we get details on the Legends omnibus or the new trilogy.

I remember enjoying her EQ books and novels back in the day. Her name stood out among the other D&D authors at the time.

I recently listened to the "When We Were Wizards" podcast and learned how poorly she was treated by TSR pretty much from Day 1.

She did move on to bigger and better things, however, so there is a silver lining there.
Likewise, those EQ books enthralled me when I was younger. I still re-read (re-play?) then from time to time. Yeah, she was a victim of the corporate culture of TSR, but at least she landed on her feet afterwards.

Just finished the Destinies Triology. Sadly I didn't like it that much, and the ending confuses me a bit .. does it's conclusion now negate Dragons of Summer Flame and the stories after that?

Anyone know the official stance on that?

if we have an official stance at all, that would be that none of this is canon anyway in 5e, including the Destinies trilogy

I don't see how it ends up retconning anything. Everything was pretty reset by the end, except for Tass's memories.

The Graystone is locked away, so the they should not be able to destroy it in Dragons of Summer Flame and therefore chaos will not release (as far as i remember).

I only glanced at the last bit, but the impression I got is "probably, but there's a backdoor in to let them happen if we change our minds or never get to do anything else."

Plus, It's not like WotC is going to put it DL novels that aren't Weis and Hickman.

It's 99% Faerun and what one new Spelljammer book?

Besides, W&H seem to want to tread new ground that doesn't really change anything that might conflict with WotC. I really wouldn't worry about ant real retcons to established lore.

Well except in WotC's adventure books. As per the adventure they released earlier, they rode the edge on canon pretty hard there.

So, any retcons will come from WotC adventures and probably not from the novels. For now.

WotC has never said there is no longer canon. Just that they aren't going to limit themselves to restrictive canon.

The Dragonlance Destinies trilogy is part of the new Dragonlance Classics product line, and does retcon canon of the original stories. If WotC choose to publish more story or game Dragonlance products, they may or may not ignore this change in canon. Note, the upcoming hardcover re-issue of the original Dragonlance Chronicles is also under the "classics" logo.

While WotC hasn't given any info on this (that I'm aware of), I personally think the "Dragonlance Classics" line was created so that Weis & Hickman can have their own continuity and WotC can, if they choose, have another. Note, the adventure "Shadow of the Dragon Queen" is NOT under the "classics" logo.

Does what happens to the Graygem in Dragons of Eternity change the future history of this timeline? It would seem so. But it isn't really "classics" canon until someone writes a story or game adventure about it. But that does seem to be the point, to retcon Dragons of Summer Flame and the beginning of the Age of Mortals. All of the visions Dalamar was having throughout the entire trilogy supports this idea.

The trilogy seemed to go back to the standard timeline at the end except for the Grey Gem stuff and frankly you have 2 outs. 1 involves time travel and 2 the grey gem itself. What with time travel there could be 2 gems now. Doubly so if pure chaos was tossed into the mix. Or heck the gem just escapes the box.

We wont really know until the write a new book that could replace Summer Flame etc.

Although I think the new new trilogy thats coming may replace the old Huma/Magius/Kaz stuff. Have to wait and see on that as well. I bet it's written before they meet Kaz to not really replace anthing.

they reset the world to before any of that (Dragons of Summer Flame and on) happened, to me that means it is not canon in 5e. If you want to call that state something else, feel free, it is what I meant by my post

that is my understanding as well
