#124 is a special "expanded" edition of Dungeon and promises to include:

1 - The first adventure in the new Adventure Path, Age of Worms
2 - Has an additional backgrounder focus on the Adventure Path's initial setting
3 - Includes a pull out map for the Adventure Path's initial setting!
4 - includes a new installment of MAURE CASTLE!!
My mind has been officially blown.

The new monsters are Crawling Heads on page 62, and the Blackstone Gigant found on page 75. At least I assumed they were new since they seem to be full writeups, barring an advancement schedule.

Actually, looking closer at Dungeon #124 next month, it promises to be an unprecedented NEXUS of continuity for Dungeon.

To whit:

1 - The Whispering Cairn: The beginning of Adventure Path #2
2- Backdrop: Diamond Lake - Overview of inital staging area for Adventure Path #2
3 - Maure Castle: Chamber of Antiquities: An add-on/ sequel to Maure Castle
4 - Temple of the Scorpion God: Part 2 (of 3) of the Shards of Eberron 3 part story arc.

All of which means that in Dungeon #124, the magazine will feature 3 adventures, and one backdrop - all of which are part of a larger story arc previously published or to be continued in other issues of Dungeon!

I don't know how you all feel about this - but I think it's great. I have 123 issues filled (or mostly filled) of more or less one-shot adventures. Longer and more complex story arcs is what I'm looking for as a customer.

Thanks Erik!

For those anticipating the new Age of Worms Adventure Path, Erik dropped quite a few hints about it in this issue:

The blurb for the first adventure next month ("The Whispering Cairn"), mentions that "What they find within the Whispering Cairn dates back to the legendary Wind Dukes of Aaqa, and presages the advent of the Age of Worms, an era of darkness, decay, and writhing doom."

Excerpts from his editorial: "Age of Worms will take your player characters from the desperate days of 1st level all the way to the awesome responsibilities of 20th. Along the way they'll battle diabolical cults, halt a lizardfolk invasion in its murky tracks, infiltrate the den of a doppleganger spymaster, and slay an undead consort to Tiamat."

"The campaign's early action takes place more than a thousand miles from the city of Cauldron, but fans of the Shackled City will se a few familiar faces in the Age of Worms Adventure Path. The Ebon Triad, a shadowy cult who assisted the Cagewrights, plays a major role in the Age of Worms, attempting to hasten its onset as a precursor to their despicable goal. The mysterious Celeste appears once more, and this time we'll even let you in on the secret. Speaking of secrets, here are a few clues to get the mind wandering for you D&D scholars out there: Pesh, Dragotha, Khellek, Redhand, and most importantly, Kyuss."

I don't know about you guys, but WOW! I thought I was eagerly anticipating this issue, but now I want the next ones more than ever!

Slightly more seriously, Dragotha and Kyuss are fairly big names, but the rest are harder to dig up.

As for the Age of Worms itself, it's going to take place over twelve issues, but will they be the next twelve? I'm looking forward to finding out.

Sweet. Kyuss makes his return debut! ;) Plus the Wind Dukes, nice 1st edition/2nd edition reference. It's official, I want to see these mods.

The Salvage Operation adventure has a really cool concept...

*SPOILERS*

Basically, the ship was lost at sea in a storm and took anchor at an island where it was seized by a bunch of insect-worshipping orcs. A half-orc rebellion led to the ship fleeing the island. Enter the PCs.

The ship itself is filled with insects (mostly spiders), undead, and a half-orc (or was it an orc?) cleric. But the really cool part is that the ship comes under attack by a giant squid just as the PCs recover what they're looking for, resulting in a race against time to get off the ship before it sinks.

Very cool.

Yeah I read that one through today, start to finish. (It seemed a little weak on the treasure motivator as the hook, mind you.)

Still - a fine module - and if the overall encounter choices are not to your taste, the concept and layout of the ship is VERY moddable to suit a DMs individual needs. Very easy to change that one around.

Salvage Operation is a solid low level adventure.
