I would have to say Ranger as a base class (its what I voted for) ... but Bard and Druid and Scout are good "variations" on it too.

But there is a note to this: I think it is perfect for the Wood Elf especially (who to me is the standard image of the elf - a 'la Legolas, of course).

But there are also the high elves, the grey elves, aquatic elves (although I have rarely seen a pc play one of these) and the wild elves. High elves are the unspoken standard race for the pc's. I think it should be the wood elf instead ... always have. The high elves should be closer to the grey elves ... more reclusive and devoted to lore and history and elven intellectual pursuits and what not.

Bard.

Nicely sums up the 'I've had time to learn a little bit of everything' flavor that goes with the elven lifespan, and even the whole singing and dancing thing fits.

Don't use favored classes in my game, but if I had to choose one, I'd go Bard as well. Sejs' line of thinking makes perfect sense to me.

I ended up voting Ranger, but with a caveat.

See, I picture a elf as a spellcaster, but nothing in D&D hits the right nail, because a nail like the one I am thinking of isn't there. It's the concept for a base class which hasn't been born yet.

I'm thinking of a spellcaster which has a new spell list, combining elements from the sorcerer (spontaneous casting, as well as some of the more flavourful spells) the druid (nature connections, and most if not all of the spells, since elves are tied to nature) and the bard (sing-song sorta stuff, along with Bardic Knowledge.

This sort of (essentually) highly-specific racial base class hasn't been done yet to any degree, but boy, if someone had something like this, I'd buy it in a snap. This draws heavily on the Tolkien elves in Rivendell and Lothlorien, those magical, but secretive ones who have arcanse lore from ages past. The type of all-spanning magic which all the other forms of the younger races magic sprang from.

I dunno, it's a thought I've been through around, but have yet to replicate to any degree, but for my homebrew I'm likely going to be statting up somehting like this. It's gonna take a long time to do so, however.

Duskblade was a close third, as well. Although - Con really hurts that class, but the flavour is rght where it should be :) Bard was a closer 4th, as well (and WTF is with Gnomes being bards? Yeesh  )

Interesting. Unlike the Dwarf - who overwhelmingly had Fighter chosen for its Favored class (with a minority choosing Cleric and a smaller minority choosing either Samurai or Warblade, as I recall), the Elf has four classes collectively chosen for its favored class to almost the same degree:

Duskblade, Ranger, Sorcerer, Wizard.

Also, there is a small minority that prefer Bard (and an even smaller minority that preferred the Scout). After that it dwindles down to one or two votes for this or that.

I'm a little surprised that Beguiler wasn't chosen, but then I am also surprised that the Bard did not have more votes, so I suppose the two go together.

I voted duskblade, but I'd only want it for the standard (high) elf. For other subraces, I'd still want different classes.

For example:
Aquatic elf = fighter
Wood elf = ranger
Wild elf = scout

On third thought, the Bard is what I should have gone with. I honestly think that that class suits them the best. C'est la vie.

In my last campaign, it depended upon whether they were decidous elves or coniferous elves.

Decidous elves were favoured class Bards (enchanting music, enchantment and illusion spells, general knowledge reflecting the fact that they had lived over a hundred years already and so had heard lots and lots of stuff).

Coniferous elves were favoured class Rangers because of all the time they spent protecting the rest of the world from the People of the Pines and monsters from the high mountains.

Cheers

For me it is a no-brainer: any
I don't get the concept of favoured class at all; what is the purpose of it? It certainly cannot be game balance.
