New Familiars?

What about the idea of some alternate familiars? The Improved Familiar feat allows you to choose a better familiar, such as some celestial animals, or a mephit, or a pseudodragon.

Well, some of those creatures have higher CRs and are more useful than something like a german shepherd or wolf.....and I think a wolf familiar would be rather cool.

Has anyone done this? Does it sound relatively fair?

I think it's safe to say a wolf is a lot easier to balance out for the DM than a pseudodragon....

Look out for Mongoose's Encyclopedia Arcane - Familiars: Crouching Monkey, Hidden Toad supplement that is coming out later this month/early next month... I wrote it and it is chalk full of familiar (and some not so familiar ;-) goodness... I provide a mechanic that allows casters to obtain any creature type as a familiar (for the right price) and allows creatures with up to CR 13 (ever wanted a beholder for a familiar?) to be bonded with. Of course there is much more to the book than just those couple of concepts, but I can't say much more until Mongoose puts up the official Press release...

I am soooo going to get this book. Sounds very cool....Bonded to a Beholder? Exactly who is who's familier in that relationship.

Counter Pack 6: Summoned Creatures will feature several new animals that can be used as familiars, as well as animals that can be summoned via Summon Nature's Ally or Summon Monster (these would have to be celestial or fiendish, though) and animals you can become via Wild Shape.

It's due in late July (aka GenCon)...
