New Feat looking for feedback: Ignite Spell

IGNITE SPELL [Metamagic]

Your fire spells last for just a split-second longer, giving them the opportunity to set fire to all combustibles in their path.

Prerequisite: Pyro (feat from Song & Silence)

Benefit: This metamagic feat can only be applied to spells with the [Fire] descriptor that deal damage. Anytime a target takes fire damage from such an enhanced spell, it must make a Reflex Save (DC equal to that of the enhanced spell) or catch fire (see page 303 of the Dungeon Master's Guide for details). If the spell already this ability, this feat instead adds +2 to the DC to avoid catching on fire. An Ignited spell uses up a spell slot one level higher than the spell's actual level.

two levels higher seems a big price for this effect. Could you manage with just one level higher? Either that or drop the prerequisite? As it stands, seems like a feat I wouldn't want to use as a player.

DamionW: I think your right.. one level higher seems fine so I changed it.

I built it with the Pyro feat in mind actually, I thought it would be a good step up that would make Pyro a little more attractive to take, since its benefits are pretty much set in stone and after a while it just wouldn't be worth it anymore.

I made a metamagic feat because I thought it would be a little more interesting than an "Improved Pyro" feat.

Anyway, just a little insight to my thinking process..

Well, one, I have no idea what Pyro does off the top of my head, so that puts me out of the original loop. However, to simply improve lighting someone on fire, I have to go with Damion on this, one level is more than sufficient. As it is, I would hesitate to spend a Feat just to light people on fire "more effectively." I see the allure of it, but considering I wouldn't take it, then I'm guessing it ain't over powered.

I get a feel for where you're going here, but I don't think this is quite it. I will mull and get back to you.

If it helps, this is the Pyro feat:

PYRO [General]

Your good at lighting objects and opponents on fire.

Benefit: If you set something or someone on fire by any means (alchemist's fire, for example), the flames do an extra 1 point of damage per die, and the Reflex save DC to extinguish the flames increases by +5.
Normal: Fire generally does 1d6 points of damage. A successful Reflex save (DC 15) extinguishes it.

I don't think it would be too overpowered to drop pyro as a prereq, and simply have the feat apply to any appropriate spell. Catching fire is an anoyance at all but the lowest levels. I would also leave the DC as a flat DC, if there is one for catching fire.

What if instead of just regular "catching on fire" that does 1d6 per round, the feat deals xd6 per round (where x equals the level of the spell used)?

Thats worth at least 2 levels. An easier mechanic might be 1/2 damage on round two, save for half. That would be similar to repeat spell, and there might already be a similar feat, as it seams familiar to me.
