D&D 5E New idea for multiclassing.

This might be better for dip-based multiclassing, but doesn't help with hybrid concepts or career changes. In other words, it still doesn't make swordmages work.

In practice, I'd be more inclinded to use the idea as a starting point for several new subclasses rather than introduce it as a blanket rule.

Would taking a leaf out of 4e and having multiclass feats that let you use a more limited subclass feature be more balanced? There are a few of those already.
