New Incantatrix Questions

Thanks for the info people. That helps alot. Hopefully I'll get my book soon!

Five? Red Wizards only have to give up ONE extra school. So it would be 4 forbidden schools, 3 if the Red Wizard/Incantatrix is a Diviner.

[Edit] P.S. How does the abilities that let you apply metamagics to other people's spells, existing spells, and items work? I've heard you have to make a Spellcraft check, but do you have to pay any spell slots?

No, it is limited to 3+Int Modifier / day (for each it appears). It also provokes an AoO (and you must ready an action to perform the Coop), although it can be performed 'defensively' (as if Casting Defensively).

Ah, maybe I misconstrued the comment above about spellcraft checks. It appears they only apply to adding metamagic to anothers' spell slots?

Also, did the ability get the erratta for MoF incorporated into it, so that the text now actually says you can't add metamagic if you couldn't normally cast a spell of that level?

WOW. That's awesome!

Oh, and another thing. The school you give up like a specialty, do you get the normal benefits of specializing in a school? And can you use the spells you knew before becoming an Incantatrix and use spells of that school from items (like the Red Wizard's extra prohibited school)?

The Spellcraft checks (DC 18 + 3*Adjusted Spell Level) apply to Metamagic to other spellcaster's spells and for attempting to apply metamagic to existing spell effects. The spellcraft DC does tend to make it ... rather difficult to boost any spell past your casting range anyway.

Seize Concentration and Snatch Spell both have Opposed Spellcaster Level checks.

Instant Metamagic has no such checks, so therefore a Wiz 10/Incanatrix7 could cast a Maximized Meteor Swarm as it is currently written (using Instant Metamagic).

No, you do not gain the benefits of specialization if you weren't a specialist to begin with. It is completely an added cost.

And I'm not sure, as written, it doesn't say anything about being able to cast existing spells before, but if the 3.5 DMG Red Wizard says they can, I would lean towards that standard myself (as it's the path of least resistance).

Wicked. That will be quite a spectacle at Epic levels when I can surprise my DM with Intensified Meteor Swarms. :p

Can a 9th level Incantatirx use both of his Instant Metamagics for the day on a single spell, to apply two metamagics for free to the same spell?

Funny enough, they did rule out exactly that (casting spells of a level you couldn't actually cast normally with instant metamagic) in the errata for MoF, but seem to go back to the original version in the "toned-down magic" 3.5. ;)

You won't hear any complaining from me. ;)

It is only once or twice per day, after all.

Odd. The local gaming store had over a half-dozen of them on the shelf a couple days ago ...
None of the stores here are expecting them 'til next week. Amazon says April 7. And BarnesAndNoble.com is shipping them today (for only $23.06). I think wizards is playing favorites when it comes to ship dates.
