New Iron DM Competition is Open

Since it appears that no-one has any objections to me holding a round of Iron DM, I hereby declare the Games to be Open !

Since this is my first attempt at such an undertaking, I’ll go easy with the rules and impose less stringent deadlines.

1. Each pair will be given a list of 6 (six) ingredients to be used as well as 1 (one) extra ingredient which can be used instead of any of the six.

Note: In judging I will continually be asking myself: “Could this ingredient have been replaced with any other, without sacrificing the adventure ?” For example, if the ingredient is an athach,, and you use it as guardian,, then that athach could just as easily have been an advanced girallon or a hill giant with some levels. If the ingredient is, say friendship, ,try to be certain that a sense of loyalty or duty wouldn’t advance the story just as well .For my part I will try to make the ingredients specific enough.

2. I will post all of the pairings and their ingredients at the same time. Each pair will have 96 hours (that’s 4 days) to post their entries. As is usual, we will be on our honor not to look at the entries until our own is posted.

3. The first 8 (eight) contestants to apply will be accepted. I hope that the deadline is flexible enough to allow all of us to know in advance if we will be able to participate, so for the time being I will not be looking for alternates.

4. In judging I will, obviously, be looking to see if all of the ingredients have been used, then to see how they have been used (see NOTE above), and finally I’ll be going on my own feeling as a DM (I’ve got 18 years of experience). No points, no formulas.

That’s all, please feel free to sign up below, and I wish you the best of Luck.

What is this? I actually stumbled upon an Iron DM contest that wasn't already full? Astonishing! Count me in.

Note: Most Iron DM games have a descriptor, like: IRON DM Spring '02.
Maybe you could call yours the D-lightful Iron DM Contest #1. (or something similar but less punny)
This would let people know it's not being run by the usual folks, in case they are confused.

I’d like to thank all those who have applied thus far. Four more spots to fill, and then I’ll conduct the Draw and post the Pairings for the First round.

My screen name actually has nothing to do with D-light, it’s a reference to my love of sunlight and my slim frame (190 cm. and 67 kg.); and I’m really not fond of puns, but I won’t hold that against you.

Maybe I should call it: “Iron DM #1 Not-Being-Held-By-The-Usual-People”…
Then again, something more catchy would probably be better…

Truth be told, I’ve always been slightly uncomfortable with big, bold, proclamations – they have a disturbing tendency towards being incorrect…
Even, my “witty”, supposedly glaringly obvious title could be proven wrong.

What if, for instance, I was “one of the usual people” under a different name ? Or, what if “the usual people” aren’t people at all, but rather aliens from a distant dimension congregating here and using our Iron DM entries to learn about the human mind so they could more effectively control us ? Endless possibility !

Post Scriptum I) Off topic, but whenever I see a thread entitled “Hivemind” I get the jitters !

Post Scriptum II) By this time it should be obvious to anyone that this Iron DM competition is in fact NOT being held by the usual people.

I would like to sign up as well.I have a vague idea of what the iron dm is, but perhaps you could direct me to an old description of how this exactly goes?I hope my partial ignorance will not bias you against me.....although now that I think of it I am ignorant of lots of things.:p

mystraschosen, I will certainly not be biased considering that you've blundered onto one of the things I have yet to master - namely I have still to successfully post a link on these boards.

Perhaps someone else would be so kind ?

The Iron DM concept is, in brief, the art of sculpting an adventure around several differing "ingredients". Entries are judged for playability and the use of the ingredients in both specific and novel ways.

You will be given a list of 6+1 ingredients. The 1 (one) is a "joker" or wild card which can (but doesn't have to) replace any of the 6. I've done this because I've seen in past competitions too many otherwise worthy entries be spoiled because one of the ingredients was "shoehorned" into the mix.

I know this doesn't help much, but until someone posts the link (please) you'll have to search the database for either "IronDM: Winter" or "Holiday Iron DM".

All the best.

I've just realised that my competition does in fact need a name. If for no other reason, but to allow the future winner to add the title to his sig.

At this point I'm leaning towards calling it: "The Fool's Errand Iron DM Competition".

How does that grab you ?
