New Level 0 Spell: Pale Touch

A range spell that deals d4 as a cantrip isn't out of the question either as long as it is close range since the damage is comparable to a sling. Beyond that though bump to 1st level.

I've updated the first post - Disrupt Undead is a ranged spell that deal 1d6 points of damage to undead as a 0-level spell. My spell is a touch version of the same spell - is 1d8 damage fair (for losing the ability to use the spell at range?). As a comparison, it would be equivalent to a longsword's worth of damage, only against undead.

No, it's a bit too strong for a 0-level spell. If we were talking about a 2nd-level spell, it would probably be fair to make a touch-range version of an equal-level ray deal one degree better damage, but I don't really think a cantrip warrants it. I would make this cantrip's damage 1d4+1 or 1d3+2, most likely, compared to Disrupt Undead; don't know if I'd be OK with it becoming 1d4+2. Also, the name is too similar. :\ Maybe call it Pale Touch.

Maybe call it Pale Touch.

Woo, I couldnt think of a good name, thanks for the help!

Id be inclined to leave it a d6 rather than get funny with d4+1 or something. (But I dont think d8 is 'too powerful', its just a narrow undead hoser, mostly for the duskblade).

Measuring it against existing spells, it seems fine. It's closest analogues are Disrupt Undead and CLW (which deals damage against undead critters with a touch). It's slightly weaker than CLW, so it probably shouldn't be first-level (it doesn't scale), and it's about on par with Disrupt Undead.

It's 1 more point of damage, and demands a MELEE attack, rather than a RANGED attack. That's fine. It's riskier, and to take that risk, you need some sort of payoff.

I might make a save for half damage or something. MAYBE. But you're probably fine.

I don't know what people are talking about with Acid Splash (1d3 ranged touch)...Disrupt Undead doubles that max damage in exchange for dealing it against a specific range of creatures (undead only). A 0-level touch attack that dealt 1d4 REGARDLESS would be fine, so a 0-level touch attack that deals double that max damage in exchange for dealing it against a specific range of creatures (undead only) seems exactly in the pattern for the game.

I don't think your analogy quite works WRT CLW, KM. :) Cure Light has the added benefits of 1) being able to heal the living, and 2) dealing 1-5 points of extra damage/healing. But it also allows a Will save for the unwilling. This cantrip has no saving throw, and is one level lower because it can't serve the dual purpose of healing. I still think it'd be best at 1d4+1 or 1d6 or something.... Although on further thought I've decided it might be fair at 1d4+2 or 1d6+1.

I would probably keep it at 1d6. Clerics and Duskblades are often going to be in melee anyway, so the switch from ray to melee isn't that big of a deal.
