As far as I know, the term 'Underdark' originated in Doug Niles's Dungeoneers' Survival Guide. The original Forgotten Realms Campaign Set doesn't use the word, instead 'Realms Below' -- see here (search for 'Realms Below') for notes on Ed Greenwood's original Realms underworld. The word 'Underdark' was applied to both the Realms and the World of Greyhawk retroactively.

Good eye, thanks for the correct. I first noticed the word Underdark being used in the Drizzt novels way back when and thought that it originated from FR. I actually still have the FR boxed set (grey box) sitting on my shelf. I should have checked it, thanks again D00d.

For some big adventures, look for the release of my Slumbering Tsar trilogy by Necromancer Games through Kenzer, or as I like to call it, a half-million words of Orcusy goodness. The first installment should be appearing on shelves some time this year with the other two not far behind. They're in art production right now.

So sold!

Since the thread title is not specific to the Drow, I think it's safe to post this here - being new cover art and all.

Can anyone tell me why Expedition to Undermountain isn't an FR accessory? From the name, you'd assume it was.

Probably to get folks who aren't Forgotten Realms fans to give a a flip-through and maybe pick it up? I wasn't even thinking of getting either Expedition to Undermountain OR Drow of the Underdark, because I figured they'd be Forgotten Realms books. Now that it looks like DotU is going to be a book in the "monster series" it's moved to my "must see if it will fit into the budget" list. If EtU turns out not to be too closely tied to the Realms, I may have to pick it up too. After all, my campaign isn't in Greyhawk right now but I'm planning on getting Expedition to Greyhawk Ruins.

Slumbering Tsar promises to be (for me at least) the next Rappan Athuk. :)

That is truly a kind sentiment which I appreciate, but it is also borderline blasphemy. As Official Killer DM #0806, I'm afraid going to have to pretend I never heard you say that. ;)
