New name for "gish"? (forked from Character Concepts: Gish and Teleporter Mage)

I vote for Fwiz. Can also be turned into an adjective, as in "that class is a bit too fwizzish for me".

Sounds gishy to me...

On the whole topic, I feel reminded of this one: http://xkcd.com/14/

Just substitute copyright law with gish. ;)

It's not that I particularly like the term. But I just can't bring myself to dislike it either... I am not sure if it will ever be used in my gaming group. Fighter/Wizard and Swordmage/Mageblade/Duskblade will probably do for us.

Usually I agree with Whizzy, but I actually love the term Gish.

And I'll be honest when I say the first time I heard Gish used in context I thought it was an Anime term and was surprised, but delighted, to hear it originated in DnD. I honestly thought it a clever co-opting of the term.

That said, it's effectively spread through my gaming group, so it's all gravy to me.

/also a fan of the Pumpkins, so technically that was where I first heard the term, but meh.

While not quite as rage-infected as the Vampiric Mouse, I also absolutely hate seeing that silly word used for just about any hybrid caster/fighter character.

It's almost as bad as for those knights in the Quest for the Holy Grail Monty Python movie... *cringe*

"Lazer Cleric" is a close second.

I still think it is silly to get worked up about how gish sounds. But in the spirit of community I'll throw my vote towards spellblade. It has a nice ring to it, isn't an actual class and there currently isn't a magical item by that name. Fighter-mage or that groggy version fighter-magic user is too limited. There are so many arcane different spell flinging classes, prestige classes, paragon paths, etc that to use merely mage feels short sighted to me. Not to mention multiclassed paladins, samerai or simular warrior types getting pidgin holed with fighter.

If we're making up silly new names to replace a silly new name that replaced a perfectly workable old name I vote for...Warzard. Oh yeah doesn't that just roll off the tongue, so sexy.

I agree! From now on anyone who doesn't use the term Warzard, or know what it means, is a lame old hater grognard! B-)

Honestly I've played D&D for over 25 years and never heard of the term gish before seeing it online -- I think the first time was in one of the WotC game developer blogs around 3E or something -- anyway I'm among those who didn't like it, so I don't use it. (Or know anyone who does in real life.)

I think it's odd that some felt a need to replace fighter-mage, or it's other incarnations, but to each his own.
