New Necromanatic Cantrip

Level: 0 (Cantrip)
School: Necromancy
Component: V
Casting Time: 1
Duration: One round every 3 Levels

After reciting the incantation your optic nerves ertherialize and your eyes float out of their sockets. From this point you can telepathically command them to fly up to 100 yards away from you per round (up to 1,000 yards away). You can spy on others through the use of this spell. The number of times you can cast this is independent of your number of cantrips you can cast per day (in fact you can cast this spell with out using a spell slot). There is one side effect to this spell, if you use it four times a day your eyes permanently fly away from you.

Use of this spell is automatically a chaotic act.

The only way this could be balanced would be by making the caster's eyes material. Even then, it's probably a 1st level spell.

As material objects, they could be seen, attacked and destroyed, thus blinding the caster permanently. Seems fair.

I'd give them AC 18 (+8 size) and a single hit point.

As I said your optic nerves ertheialize but not your eyes. In addition I'll divide the current range per round by 10 (to 100 yards) and I'll give it 1 hit point per 6 levels up to level 60 (10 hit points maximum). Also you can't see through objects or people using this spell or cast offensive spells at a distance.

It doesn't even look D&D...

How about something like this:

Disembodied eyes
Necromancy
Level: Sor/Wiz 1
School: Necromancy
Component: V
Range: Personal
Effect: 2 Eyes
Casting Time: Standard Action
Duration: One round every 3 Levels

Using this spell you can pull out your eyes and use them to visually roam the surrounding. Pulling out your eyes deals 1d4 points of damage and needs a concentration check (DC 15). Once removed the eyes are free to roll around the environment under the caster controll at 10ft per round, or use any other locomotion available such as a spectral hand. The eyes each have HP equal to the damage dealt when removed and are independant of each other. if destroyed the caster is left eyeless. When the spell ends the eyes are not destroyed but the caster loses use of them, so is unable to ' see' where they are or move them, if they are left in the dry they will shivel up in a week. When replaced the damge dealt at the start to reattach them. Only a heal or regeneration sepll will replace them.

I made a spell like this. Well, not like this, it was in proper D20 spell format. IIRC, it was first level and you had to concentrate...the range was 100 yards per level, IIRC. And the sensor was an invisible small eye I think.

For some reason when I submitted it on the WotC boards everyone said "Why not use Clairvoyance?" I guess their minds couldn't grasp the idea of LOWER LEVELS!

BTW Ferret, much better version.
