It cheered me greatly to see that message-board cries of "Warlocks are in! Gnomes are in!" were immediately followed by by message-board cries of "Not necessarily, dude."

Good.

Social interaction rules, thank god. They totally need something more than the diplomacy chart and terrible intimidate rules.

Gah. Even WotC R&D folk are using "gish." Bring the scourge! Bring the scourge!

Social challenges have always been incredibly difficult to implement in D&D and other games. I think Dynasties and Demagogues took a very good stab at it, and White Wolf's Exalted 2nd edition does it admirably well, too. Nothing, however, can replace an improv turn of phrase from a human being. ;)

Cheers,

I've been toying with the idea of making social interactions and maybe even some other types of encounters more like a "Dogs in the Vineyard" style...primarily dice rolling but with the stakes agreed upon by both the DM and the player and some actual interaction thrown in.

Dunno if it'll work or not. I have yet to try it.

If Wizards could integrate some of the cooler 'indy RPG' social mechanics (especially the concept of 'stakes'), then I will not only buy Fourth Edition---I would love it with a ferocity that would shiver the very foundations of the earth.

For the sake of our fragile sphere, perhaps such avenues are best left unexplored.

While I can agree in concept, I think just like people should be able to rely on their 18 intelligence character helping out the 14 intelligence player, 18 charisma characters should be able to help out their 14 charisma (hey, I'm an optimist, right?) player. Either that or I want 14 strength players lifting 18 strength loads, non-lockpicking players opening locks, and the like.

It's fun when my 18 charisma friends (hi, guys!) can pull off some massive social move, but, alas, it's just not my lot in life, and I resent being held back because I can evidence the social grace of a bull in a china shop.
