Dude, don't lunch weaons in anger. It isn't good for your tummy, particularly with middle eastern food.

I do have to say I am surprised at the number of people who appear to condemn this book without actually reading any of it, and assuming merely from the title that there is nothing that would be useful for their game contained within.

I would think this group would be the last to judge a book by its title or cover.

If anything, gamers are the first to judge books by covers. In this case, with the flood of d20 stuff out there, people have learned what will and won't work with their games. The book of vile darkness was the first real test to see what you needed in your campaign. I bought it cause it looked cool, but i've never seen a reason to use it in my dragonlance game. The boef doesnt even look cool to me, so it loses that bonus right there. I can't very well leave it out for people to just come and read, like i can the BoVD or any of my other gaming stuff.

Valar has been upfront about whats in the book. Sex rules, and naked photoshopped pics of elves and halflings and such. Do i really need to know more than that to decide whether it will work for my game or not? Its just another blurb like any other game product. When i saw Arcana Unearthed, i didn't like the cover, and the premise of the product didn't suit my game so i didnt get it. Doesnt mean its bad or useless, but just not for me. BoEF is the same. I don't need to see it to know that.

It's interesting to take a look back at this thread and notice the precise post at which it turns from people discussing the BoEF pro or con and into vituperative personal flames against other posters wherein the poster tells other people how to think and what not to say. Sometimes I think it's a good thing to step away from virtual world - away from D&D - away from message boards - and into the real world for a while. Then I can come back and think about whether something is really getting all work up and irate over and making personal attacks on other people about.

The stench of irony is overwhelming in this thread.

Exactly.
You know, I really pity a guy who is going to come up with an idea for Decameron D20 (based on Boccacio), or Fellini D20, or Bulgakov's Master & Margarethe D20.

We're adults. But we seem to be unable to argue like ones.

Ruemere

I'm repulsed by the artwork. Sweaty, unattractive people who have rolled around in dirt just don't do much for me (heh, looks like they got gamers to be the models, actually).

But I'm not too impressed by the text. That insight on Paladin's sex lives was pretty silly, IMHO. I don't think your class would dictate your attitude towards sex, even such a strict class as a Paladin.

Hm, I thought that 'sex and alignment' bit was interesting. It's probably worth thinking about for most campaigns - do LG characters need to be chaste or monogamous, does CE imply sadistic rapist, etc. I think it's more interesting & relevant for most campaigns than the kind of stuff you find in GUCK, anyway.

However I agree about the 'art' - looks yucky. Gimme my 1e Monster Manual's nice line drawings anyday. :)

The sex and alignment rules just made me want to cry. You cannot infer that much information about a lawful character's sexual mores without reference to the society in which he is situated. Being lawful entails obeying and respecting the laws and customs of your society.

Including chaotic societies? I don't think that makes any sense at all. IMC Lawful means pro-Order. Order is good, Laws promote Order, Laws are good. YMMV

I will most certainly take a look at the BOEF. I'm not really using a lot of sex in my campaigns, but I think it could be done tastefully and perhaps enrichen the game. Perhaps not. I will look at it and decide whether I feel comfortable with the book and its use, and based on that I'll buy it.

I'm not too keen on the artwork so far, but that's not really something I judge highly when considering to buy (as long as the book doesn't look like it was just printed out from word).

For titillating images, I have other books standing right on my usual book shelf. And I have yet to explain them to anyone, even though most people who know me have seen them. We all know that sex exists, is a part of all our lives, and that's that.

Wow, looks like I can't even express contempt over a laughably poor game product, anymore. And here I thought this was a game forum.
