Anabstercorian

First Post
Janeko's Sudden Discharge
Evocation
Level: Sor/Wiz 3
Components: V, S, F
Casting Time: 10 minutes
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Effect: Ray of electrical energy
Duration: 10 minutes/level or until discharged.

You imbue yourself with a powerful electrical charge that you can fire forth as a ray of electricity as a move action, ending the spell. The ray deals 1d6 points of electrical damage per 10 minutes remaining in the duration of spell (maximum 10d6).

Is this adequately clear?

Are you allowed to cast it multiple times and still have them all available? I'd bump it up another two spell levels or more, if so; since that would make it almost equivalent to a quickened (which is four levels up, plus a feat slot) lightning bolt.

I'd say no, along the lines that spells don't stack with themselves. You can't cast Shocking Grasp twice, why this?

I'm wary of the duration, personally. I think it lasts too long to make it an equally desirable version of lightning bolt. In the midst of battle it's a poor strategy, sure. Right now though you can cast it and have it available as essentiallya quickened lightning bolt before every combat, especially at high levels.

I think I would reduce the duration to 1 minute/level, and maybe bump it up to 4th level - WizWrm's point about the quickened lightning bolt are very valid.

I'm with LightPhoenix on this one. It's too good, as written, for a 3rd-level spell.

You should definitely include verbage to the effect that you can't cast and 'hold' more than one of these spells at a time.

Looks fine to me. It allows one traget, requires both a 10 minutes to cast and a move action to use, and deals 1d6/level (if used in the first 10 min) sounds like a fair 3rd level spell to me as long as you can only have one of these spells in effect at a time.

Does the spell require a ranged touch attack?

I think it's fine as is... Like lightning bolt, only cast ahead of time - so it can't really be overused that much. Only thing is that if you round properly, the thing will never do more than 9d6 damage. I might make the focus a component, but other than that, I like it.
