New Spells

Consider this change: The Save DC drops by one every time it's read.

Odd thought: What writer doesn't give his or her work a read-through when they're finished?

Does that mean that you're even more in love with yourself than you already were? :)

What if you post it in the town square under "notices"? Then it might be just a TAD powerful...

There are many variables, not just how many people see it, but also who sees it and what are they willing to do for love. There's a big difference between a level 1 Commoner and a the 18th-level arch wizard who has the king's ear in privy council. Love can have strange effects too, just ask Spike from the Buffyverse...

If your goal is to create an object that unleashes mayhem by creating lots of would-be suitors, you're better off just doing it as a magical item, not as a spell, since you can build in all the effects you need that way. (Plus, how often is this spell going to be used? Once? Twice?)

Creating a magic item would cost way more than casting a spell. A properly designed spell is easy to repeat. How often depends on how randy the signer is...

Could you accomplish this very same thing with a Greater Glyph Seal (Magic Item Compendium p.161, 4000gp) and the Lesser Geas/Quest spell? It would be a one time use.

Than perhaps design a magiacl trap reset on the paper to recast the Geas/Quest spell on the Glyph Seal that was upon it?

I'm not familiar with the Glyph Seal, but it is similar to a geas in effect...

A Glyph seal is a magical item. Comes in a regular and greater version. they both allow you to converst an arcane or divine spell into a symbol, simmilar to a Glyph of Warding spell. The regular allows you to cast a spell up to 2nd level, the greater allows a spell up to 5th level. You cast the spell while holding the Glyph seal, it retains the spell and you can put the Glyph seal onto a surface.

Kinda like a magical bumper sticker, or those plastic thingies you stick onto windows. It's a portable Glyph of Warding spell.

It's triggered as the spell, which by RAW means by proximity, but I'd imagine it'd be easy to change the conditions slightly to being read instead like Explosive Runes.

After it discharges the spell, it can be reused.

Okay, here's my original version of Love Letter:
Love Letter
Enchantment (Compulsion) [Mind-Affecting, Sexual]
Level: Sor/Wiz 7, Joining 7
Component: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 hour
Range: touch
Target: 1 letter or missive
Duration: 1 day/level
Saving Throw: Will negates
Spell Resistance: yes

"My dearest darling, my only one, how I miss thee..."
This spell enchants a letter written by the caster so that anyone who reads it will feel love for and a longing to meet the person who signs the letter at the time of casting, whether the caster or someone chosen by the caster.

Affected readers who fail to save against the spell fall in love with the signer, even if they do not know who that is, and must immediately set out to find the beloved signer. Once with the signer, they are treated as charmed until something breaks the spell. This effect ends the first time a Will save is passed. Will checks are made daily or anytime the signer takes an action against the subject. Any number of readers can be affected while the letter's enchantment lasts. Readers must be literate and understand the language the letter is written in.

The material component for this spell is a romantically worded letter written using a quill made from a Cherub's feather and ink made from the signer's blood and tears mixed with powdered lodestone.

For clarity add the following: In this case, “reading” the letter means any attempt to study it, identify it, or fathom its meaning.
You can attune any number of creatures to the love letter, but doing this can extend the casting time. Attuning one or two creatures takes negligible time, and attuning a small group (as many as ten creatures) extends the casting time to 2 hours. Attuning a large group (as many as twenty-five creatures) takes 24 hours. Attuning larger groups takes proportionately longer. Any creature attuned to a love letter cannot trigger it and is immune to its effects. You are automatically considered attuned to your own love letter as is anyone you designate as a signer, and thus always ignore the effects and cannot inadvertently trigger them.

Read magic allows you to identify a love letter with a DC 19 Spellcraft check. Of course, if the symbol of death is set to be triggered by reading it, this will trigger the symbol.

Note: Magic traps such as love letter are hard to detect and disable. A rogue (only) can use the Search skill to find a love letter and Disable Device to thwart it. The DC in each case is 25 + spell level, or 32 for love letter.
