if i buy Ebberon would i have to buy extra stuff?>

No.

One of the races, the kalashtar, uses the Expanded Psionics Handbook, but it is not needed, nor do I recommend that new players add psionics to their game.

Keep things simple; if you keep the game moving quickly, it will be more fun. When in doubt, don't buy anything new. Eberron is a very good campaign setting, btw. Just don't let all the options and details about the world slow your game down.

Just thought I'd chime in. As everyone has said, the 3 core rulebooks are a good suggestion. I'd recommend buying nothing else for awhile until you have the hang of the rule system. Every other book you buy will have new ideas, concepts and (worst of all) new rules that will make the game more difficult to learn. For adventures, look around on the web, the Wizard's D&D site has a bunch of maps and adventures that you can use.

Remember to just have fun. If you don't know a rule, just wing it!

Enjoy!

In addition to agreeing with Nyarlathotep (oh, I love that out of context ...), I'd add that one more reason to wait until you have core rule proficiency before going to supplemental material is that, while I can name several products that I think are great, but if a person isn't a fan of that part of the game, it's just not usefull to your group. Being specific for clarity's sake, I like dwarves and really think they got shafted in previous versions of the game, so Green Ronin's "Hammer and Helm" is one of my favorite books out there. But if nobody in your group has interest in playing a dwarf, and they don't come into play in the DM's storyline, then the book has no pracitical use to you no matter how much it rocks in general.

well ill buy the MM as soon as i find it (dang hastings doesnt have it) and im gonna get the sunless Citadel adventure. just got some dice and character sheets so im gonna make some sample characters today

One of the few (and fortunately FREE!) things I have not seen mentioned yet to get is a good reference sheet. It basically sums up all the things you will find yourself having to look up in the middle of a game. It gives a quick answer and a reference to a page where you can get more information if you want it.

We use them all the time, and we play almost every week.

You can find the ones we use here.

Just a warning, however, its in Microsoft Word format.

I hope you and your players have a great time. Sunless Citadel was the first paper RPG I ever played in, and it was the first 3.0 game the DM had ever run, after having not run or played in a loooong time, and even then mostly not DnD. We did lots of stuff wrong, but we loved it. I think you will as well. I'm sure we will all love to hear how it goes.

Welcome to the boards and D&D.

For adventures I'd recommend the Wizards Amulet which is a free download from Necromancer games (www.necromancergames.com) and there are some other freely downloadable ones from Pogre who posts on these boards at www.pogre.com/dnd.html.

The three core books are useful, but the PHB is the only essential, with the DMG and Monster Manual next in order of usefulness. Other things I'd strongly recommend are downloading the SRD anyway as it allows searching the text in a way a printed book doesn't and start with first level characters and simple encounters as it gives you time to get used to the rules.
