I rolled life path for soon to be players Ranger, in a upcoming undead killer/hunter campaign. And with a little modification came up with this..let me know what you think. I think it explains the rangers rage and specialization with his favored enemy (undead).
Calym was born in Hanson’s Bluff. A small town of farmers, commoners and few merchants. Population 4,100. Town was named after its founder some generations ago won the area in a card game, rumored has it he bluffed, hence the name Hanson’s Bluff.
15 years ago when Calym was 9 years old his town was destroyed, and its ruins left alone thought to be cursed. It was a cold winter, more snow than usual, some 10’ or so and unrelenting winds. Yep, it was the worst winter he had ever seen. Families would be snowed into their homes for days. 1 of the family homes was found empty only frozen blood stains were left. Originally thought to be wild beasts. The town started daily/nightly horseback patrols, whenever they could travel thru the several foot deep snow. A few days later one of the patrols didn’t come back. The town sent another larger patrol out, they never returned. Although combat could be heard echoing in the valley. 2 other family farms were found empty with only blood stains left. This sent many of the town’s people into a panic.
Several hundred people and the town 3rd level cleric packed into his temple, and planned on safety in numbers. They quickly ran out of food and those that left to resupply sometimes didn’t return. 25 brave men, the rangers and best warriors left to go to the next town several days away, and look for help. They never returned, alive that is. It was only 6 weeks into the winter and the town was left in chaos. Its best warriors were missing, families were fighting with each other, panic & chaos ensued.
Over the next few weeks 1 by 1 the family farms were killed, the undead population somehow grew and male warrior population was slaughtered. They stopped digging graves and instead burned the dead bodies, but it was to little to late. The elederly, women and children were left to starve to death, unable to go out and get food. Or freeze to death burning everything they could, trapped inside their homes. Those that went out were often killed and returned as the walking dead, very few made it out and back with food.
Calym can still here the daily screams of people being eaten alive. He remembers hearing kids trying to reason with their dad as he attacked them. Calym was helpless; he didn’t know what to do. His parents were killed in the house above and he was locked in the basement and couldn’t get out to help them. If the clouds were thick enough & the day was dark enough he would hear screaming and combat all day and night. Soon the screams were few and far away. After the 3rd month it was silent outside. Nothing but the wind and the sounds of the undead trying to claw into his barricaded could be heard. And the occasional rat he would catch and eat raw. A truly nightmarish scenario.
When the sun came back and he didn’t hear the undead, he broke out of the basement and found a few survivors.16 to be exact. They quickly got as much food as they could find and fled to the next town. 2 weeks later he returned with 50 armed soldiers, all volunteers from the other town. All the soldiers looked so tough; they had big thick spikes on their armor, large weapons and helmets oh yah, baby! Those undead beasts were going to pay for what they did! And he wanted to watch every minute of it. And so he thought the 3 day travel back to Hanson’s Bluff. But when they got there, they couldn’t find any. The soldiers couldn’t find where the undead went. All their armor and weapons were useless.
The town of Hanson’s Bluff once 4,100, and over that one winter was reduced to 16. Half of the survivors died of sickness and disease over the next few weeks. All those deaths went unpunished, unrevenged. Those useless fighters couldn’t do anything. They didn’t know how. They claimed it was the work of demons, and labeled the area cursed. Calym knew better, those ignorant warriors hearts were in the right place but they just weren’t knowledgeable.
Calym has dedicated his life to avenging the gruesome murders of his entire family, all of his friends, everybody he knew died, murdered by the undead. His sole purpose in life is to always know what to do. He will never be helpless again. He despises indecision and ignorance. He is very emotional “passionate” about the undead. To his last breathe this mildly insane man will try to rid the planet of the damned and cursed undead. He will not be a useless or incompetent warrior. He will know how to track, hunt and survive on his own. He will research and study any literature about the undead hoping to find another weakness or way to increase his “undead killing” efficiency. Calym is a 8th level ranger, hell bent on finding and destroying undead. He doesn’t sleep well and when he does he often awakes suffering from his reoccurring nightmares. He hates himself for not saving all the victims of Hanson’s Bluff and lives basically in his own self induced purgatory. He will try educating all that will listen, but quickly grows frustrated.
Calym: 8th level Ranger, Str16 / Int17/ Wis15/ Dex18/ Con16/ Cha11, he has +4 ranks to his knowledge of undead due to his passionate study, the player will still have 2 attribute points to place where he wishes, Calym has an imaginary foe or friend, and is technically insane, although fully functional, he can sense smell undead when within 30’ I haven’t decided if this is a power or just a supernatural skill.
