Hey I just settled in NY (note to self: need to update location) and suddenly am in need of some laptop repair. I've got an Asus. Can anybody recommend a good place?

Is it under warranty?

How old is it?

What's wrong with it?

It's obvious you're not inclined to repair it yourself (such people don't ask for repair shops).

if it is too old, it'll be cheaper to just buy a new one. $300-500 puts a new laptop in your hands that is better than a really old laptop.

Depending on what's wrong with it, you may be surprised at how easy it might be to fix yourself.

You can always contact the Manufacturer. Even if it's not under warranty, they'll still probably want to fix it (so they can bill you) or name one of their local authorized repair centers (like Best Buy). Most manufacturers use local shops to handle consumer repairs, usually for warranty work, but post-warranty you might as well use the same people since they likley worked on your model and have some experience with that vendor's products and access to their parts inventory.

I would be willing to do some light repair myself, I have opened old laptops and taken out the hard drive for example. But I probably need some tutorial on that.

It is not under warranty; It's two years old.

The problem is that 'windows fails to start'. that's about all I can say. I turn it on and after seeing a blank screen saying 'starting windows' for several minutes, it eventually leads to a 'startup repair diagnosis' option which doesn't fix anything and leads me back where I've started. There are no funny noises or anything.

well, here's the easy-bake solution (meaning, there are more advanced things to try, but that would take longer to explain):

reinstall the OS.

My general approach is pop the drive and mount it on another PC to back it up (or slide a new drive in, keep the old one one). Either way, the first goal is to protect your data.

Then, pop in a windows install CD, watch to press a key (or fix your boot order in the system config screen) so it will actually boot to CD and not just jump back to the hard drive to boot.

Then run through the reinstall. I recommend doing a hard drive erase (it should be in there as an option), rather install over it, as it might keep the offending bits.

Once your done installing the OS, install an anti-virus (Microsoft Security essentialsis free and does not suck), then run Windows Updates until there are none left. then install your other apps, then copy over your data.

good luck.
