You want at least half the party to be comfortable in melee otherwise the 1-2 that are will get hammered. Very strong controller & defenders can mitigate this a bit but it requires accurate play.... Otherwise you can get by with any old mix really. You want spot healing but if you are short of leaders then M/C feats can cover that.

What about Barbarian or Ranger is it that appeals to you? You can get the wilderness man feel with either, maybe with some feats to boost skills - the Barbarian is a little short (of skills he is ofc almost 7' tall)

Well, in the campaign that i played in the Barbarian was the bad ass, but also he was mentally thick, cumbersome, and limited in skills checks. The ranger we had was flexible but could not deliver the damage we needed. my goal was to engineer a player that could have the best of both. flexibility of a ranger and the raw power in a barbarian. I know this is a munchkin thing to do, but im just trying to experiment with classes and find a great fit.

There is a Barbarian build (Whirling Slayer) built around using two weapons - you could probably go that route, possibly multiclassing ranger, and picking up appropriate skills, and end up with a damage power-house who still is a skilled explorer with decent flexibility.

As others have mentioned, the Shifter race is pretty much the way to go to represent a PC with lycanthropic ability.

Also, on a side note, a Dragon article from a few weeks back presented a variety of backgrounds for Shifters from the Forgotten Realms, including one for a group of, essentially, elven shifters descended from an elven werewolf. So if that was a key part of the character concept, the option for it remains.
