Hello, im as stated in the title new to D&D or well have forgotten everything in the 10+ years Ive not played. i have recently started playing again and am making a new character for a evil campaign that will be starting in a few weeks. i am think of making a monk/rog or a Fighter, i am trying to figure out what feats and gear to get, sense i am starting at lvl 10 the phb or dmg (cant remember whi h one it was in) says that at that lvl that i should amassed around 49k in gold and stuff. Can anyone give me some suggestions on what i should do, what gear i should get and feats? I think I want to get my dex as high as possible for the rogish monk.

Thanks

Sure, dex and Wis for a rogueish monk. You might consider the Dodge/Mobility/Spring Attack chain of feats. Improved Initiative never hurts, since if you can go first you can make sneak attacks on those who haven't gone yet. Let's see, early on in the Monk levels you have some bonus feat choices to make I think the monk's Flurry of Blows plus Stunning Fist is a nice combo -- if you can stun your opponent on the first blow of the flurry, the second one would be a sneak attack. Don't even need a flanking partner for that one!

As far as gear goes, you probably need a mix of defense (ring of protection, cloak of resistance), utility (handy haversack, everburning torch), and maybe some ranged offense. Not sure the best route there but maybe a magic shortbow or something. And of course healing supplies.

Given that you haven't played in a long time I would suggest playing the Fighter for simple ease of play to start out. A Rogue/Monk is a cool idea, but you may want to start out a little more straight forward than that.

What books do you have access to for building a PC? That will greatly effect the answers you are going to get on this. The PHB2 is an excelent source of feats for the mid to high level fighter.

Generally I would say go human (more feats and skills) or dwarf (Con boost, small fighting boost against some enemies, dwarven racial weapons are martial), focus on a particular combat style and don't try to be able to do everything. You are not going to be a skill user by any means, and a lot of the class skills for the Fighter, other than Initmidate in IME, don't get used. Don't be afraid to plop some down in cross class skills. Fit them to a concept. For example, if your PC has spent a lot of time as the body guard of a powerful mage he likely has ranks in Spot and Listen (to detect threats) and may have picked up some Knowledge (arcana). Ask your DM what skills will be useful in the game and if you can trade any out on a one to one basis. In my games I regularly let Fighters trade out Ride and Handle Animal for Spot and Listen.

If your DM has it, ask if you can use the wealth by level guide lines in Magic Item Compenduim for a 10th level PC. It will make outfiting your PC much easier.

If you play a rogue/monk you will miss alot, and your armor may be poor
a fighter is a lot easier to build and play.

a 2nd vote for borrowing a PHB2 - the back has a good selection of standard feats, and equipment. The eqiupment lists have a good selection of basic magic items is designed for npcs so look a few levels higher for what gear you can get.
If PHB2 is not available:
16k weapon (+2 shocking or +1 unholy if you think you will be fighting a lot of good guys)
4-9k armor +2 or +3
2k ring protectin and/or amulet of natural armor +1
16k girdle of gaint strength +4
4k Cloak of protection +2
~3k magic composite long bow, built for your strength +1

If you want more utility items - boots, bags, hat of disguise, anything from the magic item compendium, etc - trading the girdle for +2 str gloves provides enough cash to play with

i have access to a lot of the books

also have been back playing for a month to 2 months now. have picked up a lot that i forgot but when it comes to building a higher lvl one im kind of lost.

Do you have any thoughts on how much monk vs. how much rogue you want (conceptually, or rules-wise)?

Also, is this a one-shot or a long campaign? How does your DM feel about you multiclassing with monk (will you be allowed to switch back and forth between rogue and monk levels, or will you have to stick with one or the other as you progress in levels)?
