As for fumbling about for the right part, a few minutes setup before the game helps that out alot as long as you have the space for it.
Once I made the entire dungeon for "Tears for Twilight Hollow" out of foamcore and copies of the pullout grid map from the DMG. Getting the right room piece out at the right time was sometimes awkward, but the look on everybodies face when I dropped the main temple piece on the table was worth the effort. I don't know if it was worth all the damn money I dropped on the project for such specific pieces, but it looks like this batch of niftyness is much more along the lines that I want.
