Nightcrawler as a Tiefling

Hrm.
Psychic Warriors in 3.5e get access to decent teleportive abilities. The 2nd-level power Dimension Swap switches their position with that of a nearby ally. The 3rd-level power Dimension Slide teleports the Psychic Warrior a short distance as a standard action, or a move action if they spend 4 more power points (requiring a manifester level of 9th or higher, though, so not practical until the middle or upper character levels; until then they need to use a standard action for it). The 4th-level power Psionic Dimension Door works more or less like the core-rules spell Dimension Door.
From the Book of Nine Swords, you could use the unarmed Swordsage variant (mentioned near the end of the swordsage flavor text stuff), giving the Swordsage some of a Monk's unarmed fighting ability, then just take the necessary feats from that book later on to further boost unarmed prowess. Swordsages can learn the Shadow Jaunt maneuver at 3rd-level or higher (it's a 2nd-level maneuver, so they need at least 3 initiator levels to take it), which teleports them 60 feet or so as a standard action. Then there's the Shadow Slide maneuver, which is 5th-level so available at Swordsage level 9 or higher, which works as a move-action. And lastly, the Shadow Blink maneuver is 7th-level (available at Swordsage level 13 or higher), teleporting them a short distance as a swift action.
The psionic prestige class 'Elocater' has a few teleportive abilities, but is just as much focused on being fast and getting haste-like benefits, floating over the ground, and whatnot. It's in the XPH, like the Psychic Warrior, and is available to members of that class if they take a few feats and such to qualify.
Also, if I recall correctly, there's been some debate recently about something called Abrupt Jaunt, in the Player's Handbook II, and related material in there. Some wizard variant or whatnot that lets them teleport around a bit, IIRC. Might be some spells in the PHB 2, or in the Spell Compendium, that help with that.

IIRC from my days of reading X-Men (before it became trendy!), nightcrawler had the following abilities:
- Massive racial bonus to Climb (possibly even Spiderclimb)
- Massive racial bonus to Hide
- Prehensile tail
- Ability to Dimension Door or Teleport, but longer distances caused him to be exhausted
- Very high DEX score
Maybe a Tiefling Rogue/Swashbuckler with Slippers of Spiderclimbing, Cloak of Elvenkind, Cape of the Monteback and Gloves of Dexterity.

Aye, that's basically what he had in D&D terms. At some point, maybe just in the later Ultimate X-Men comics, he became a swordsman as well (at least, judging by what he's like in the video game X-Men Legends 2).
Nightcrawler would have an ability like the spell Spider Climb (or the psionic power Wall Walker, which Psychic Warriors can get, or the Shadow Hand martial stance Dance of the Spider, which Swordsages can get). Plus huge Dexterity, some unarmed combat prowess, and significant teleportive abilities. And a prehensile tail....somehow.
Short-range teleportations didn't put much strain on him, so he could do a lot of them in a short time, but they'd still exhaust him physically and mentally after a few dozen short teleports. He could make only a few longer-range teleports before exhaustion, similar to a Dimension Door or something. The furthest he could teleport was maybe one country or one continent in distance, I don't recall. But it was really painful and exhausting for him to go that far.
Probably the most accurate representation of Nightcrawler would be a Psychic Warrior, multiclassed a bit into the unarmed-combat-focused Swordsage variant, taking the Overchannel, Talented, and Psionic Meditation feats at some point. Probably taking the Dance of the Spider martial stance for his wall-crawling, since it has unlimited use. And learning any powers they can to boost their Dexterity score or bonus.
(my favorite Marvel character!)

I'll have to go over this with Jim. Give him his options. I've got several kids to entertain over the holiday next week and this is what was decided on. Think I'll negate the SLA Darkness from his Tiefling and add to his DEX Score +2. Balance?
The other kids are still looking at what races they want from a list I gave them. So this may be repeated 4 more times...
