Niobe's Dilemma (Manzanita Judging)

"I am afraid that I am rather incompetent in the case of a battle. My skills lie in reading and manipulating the ziivash."

*Lasair glances at the envelope.*

"Interesting. There are few in these lands who both know my name and had the opportunity to sneak the envelope into the carriage. If it was Carsis, as I suspect it may be since he seems inextricably tied to this situation, then he risked himself greatly to present this."

OOC: I only saw you glance AT the envelope :p

Lasair opens the envelope and opens the letter
[sblock=Lasair]"Dear Lasair,

A friend tells me you're off to help my brother, and another that Niobe has been taken. While at the moment I can only give you my word that I have not taken her, It eases my heart to know that you will be one of the ones looking for her. While I wish to keep a low profile, I also wish to do what I can to help. I do not know who would wish to do such a thing, but I will do what I can to gather such information.

Please, if you can safely do this, when the carriage stops in the town of Riverton, about 2 days out of Earling by express carriage, meet me at the Red Herring. I hope I will have some information that will be useful to you by then.

Safe Travels,
Carsis"

While not exactly sure what the ziivash is, Jaan finds the overal meaning of Lasair's statement clear enough.

"Between Troi, Wilhelm and myself, we should be all right if it comes to a fight."

Jann falls silent, and turns to look out the window for a while. He frets with the buckles on his armour, the positioning of his maces and bits and pieces of his gear generally.

"I know fish are rare because they can only live in water--what curious animals--but what an unusual request as to meet at a fish. Is the colour of red for a herring uniquely identifying? I could see meeting at some sort of stationary landmark that could be easy to find, but how unusual to choose an animal...Is this a typical custom of westerners--to meet at the location of their favourite animal?"

Troi ponders this, then chuckles quietly.

"A red herrin' is th' term fer a trail that leads to a dead-end. Dunno what'cha mean, though... meetin' at a critter? Is this on th' letter, er somethin'? Maybe ya should let one a us see it, since it's prolly writ by somebody from 'round here, maybe we kin make more sense outta it..."

"Oh, well I ask if red is a unique identifier for a herring because I am asked to meet at some indeterminate 'Red Herring' to learn some clues. If it is a common term for a clue that leads to a false trail, then I wonder why anyone in their right mind--notwithstanding that meeting at a fish is sort of unusual--would choose to meet there. Is there some place where I could expect to find fish?"
