No dailies?

The whole daily / per-encounter power system is quite good - at least it has been working so far in our group. After last game session, however, an interesting question came up: what if a player doesn't want daily powers?

I won't go here into the reasons why someone would want to do so (I have a few ideas, though), I'd rather come up with a balanced trade-in. Would such a character get an Encounter power instead? Encounter powers are much less powerful than dailies, but they get to be used more often, so perhaps they balance out. Maybe that's not enough, maybe it's too much. Any thoughts?

Dailies are more powerful, but encounters are used more often so that's a hmmmmm. If I was being nice I'd probably give out an even mix of same level encounters and utilities equal to the number of dailies surrendered.

Alternatively if it's a multiclass character I'd "give" one of the multiclass class features.

Not sure how that would balance out for either idea, definately needs testing. If a player wants to let him but be sure to tell him if it doesn't work you'll have to do some rejigging.

It depends on how much your group adventures in a day before resting. I think the assumption is about 4 encounters. If a daily is twice as good as an encounter power, but only used one/four encounters, then it's only worth half an encounter power.

That wasn't an attempt at real math, just a quick thought on how one might begin to think about making a rule to cover this trade in.

I'd probably let them trade a daily for an encounter of lower level if they asked. Although I'm not sure I'd like to see the whole group do that, as long as the rest of the group still had dailies I think it would work out OK.

1) If the rest of the party still has dailies, they'll use theirs up and want to rest eventually, keeping the gain from the switch to a reasonable level.

2) Ditto for healing surges. Even if they all made the swap, they would still have a limited number of healing surges and would eventually have to rest.

And I can definately see why someone might want to. You miss a couple of times with a daily and you start to wonder what the point was.... Dailies are swingy, while encounter powers are less so.

As a DM, more encounters sounds like more varied combats and less sudden explosive power... which is good. The only problem is if they get too close to max power with a short rest then there are some resource/pacing problems.

I was wondering about something similar for trading an encounter for an at-will, for more variety of those.

I ran this exact idea on the boards not too long ago, and generally got a positive response.

Some people actually think its more powerful though, simply because you will almost always be at full strength.

The other advantage of more encounters and less dailies is that encounters tend to be the ones that rely most heavily on the secondary stats. So a person who focuses on that stat could actually look pretty good. For example, a fighter that has a higher dex than strength for example.

Well, as long as you don't allow duplication of powers (which you shouldn't), that shouldn't be _too_ bad.

It's okay to have two fighter level 3s, it's not okay to have two Rain of Blows. That kinda thing.

While I'm not going to disagree, I was wondering why it's not ok to have the same encounter power twice?

Anyway main topic - I don't think there will be any problems balance wise, but players may find it harder to take out solos...
