No divine casters? Why don't vampires rule the world

Who says they haven't? Ruling from the shadows, the masses oblivious... Think Blade.

Both these points illustrate that vamps dont take over the world for the same reason that any other high-order predator doesnt take over the world: There is a finite food supply (which doesnt apply to liches, but they dont reproduce and its very difficult to become one), annd they have natural enemies (adventurers) which help to keep their population down.

The Stanford study illustrates how, assuming the presence of adventurers, this will occur naturally, but if you dont feel comfortable with that, the Buffy route is available: If the undead/demons are too powerful, then some sort of cosmic balancing force creates opposites. whether it be humans with superpowers, celestials, different rules, etc.

So adventurers are like predetors for powerful undead? It's a kind of food chain from commoners -> vampires -> adventurers.

Come to think of it, do adventurers have any real incentive to wipe out all monsters? They'd lose their liveihoods, just like too many vamps would starve to death...

I dunno, 'cause the weresharks won't let them?

What kinda question is that really? I mean, vamps are among the few D&D monsters that actually have honest-to-god weaknesses that can be exploited. With most critters, brute force is the only thing that cuts it.

They are reliant upon their followers for those times they are incapacitated (day), and the more followers an evil tyrant has- the more likely one is going to want to become the tyrant themself. Controlling the world is going to require a lot of followers.

Besides- if there are other vampires involved, then the matter becomes complicated. Not only is your dinner intelligent and unwilling- there is someone who wants whats on your plate.

On a side note- there was spelljamming adventure where the villian was the first vampire on his planet, that knew nothing of vampires. He accidently created too many and the world drank itself to death.
