No HDD in PS3?

But while Linux would require a hard drive to run on, Kutaragi told Impress PC Watch, "We're not going to equip [the PS3 with] a HDD by default, because no matter how much [capacity] we put in it, it won't be enough." It was unclear whether he was referring to the previously known fact that the PS3 would not have an internal hard drive or whether he was indicating that the device would not come with the external 2.5-inch detachable HDD outlined in the specs revealed at E3.

Probably old news but why on earth is PS3 still going the route of memory cards? Or did I miss something and they have something else lined up for game saves and various other things?

From what I've heard it will have CF, SD, and sony memorystick slots. Saved games don't take up much space, but disk caching does speed up load times, etc.

I've heard that Blu-Ray has a faster access time than conventional DVD-ROM, but we'll see.

I am still on the borderline; I was 80/20 XBox360 (over PS3) pre-E3 and I'm probably about 70/30 now.

I guess we'll see but I know one of the main reasons why my PS2 has a layer of dust on it was that I hated shuffling around memory cards looking for a place to save data and if the game came out on all three systems I got the Xbox version cause of this too. (Except for Soul Caliber 2, which I got the Gamecube version.)

Yup. The hard drive is basically why I got all multi platform games on the Xbox. (The graphics were a plus).

So even though the 360 may (or may not) have worse graphics than the PS3, if it has a hard drive it's going to be my primary console.

Well, a HD is not confirmed for all versions of the 360 from what I understand. But I've never needed more than one mem card for all of my PS2 save games either.

From the description that was posted, it sounds like it may well simply take a blank HD of what ever size you cared to install, rather than having every unit come with a 30gig HD. From what I understand it has been somewhat of a problem for MS finding someone who still manufactures the size HD they use in the X-Box.

If you play a lot sports games --and like simulating leagues-- you can fill a PS2 memory card pretty quickly. At least my one friend did.

Heck, even I needed a extra card. Oh wait, that's because I was using my PS2 as a DVD player, and the damn driver update ate up half the card. My bad...

I assumed Sony was just trying to save some money making the HD optional. Aren't they facing an unpleasant price-point for the PS3? I thought I read they were considering bake sales...

I like memory cards since I can take special saves (cars, characters, etc) over to my buddies' place(s).

That, too.

In any case, I certainly do like the non-proprietary (and multiple size) memory card use for the PS3 (CF, SD, memorystick). Easy to procure, multi-use, and relatively cheap for large sizes (and much longer-lasting than prone-to-failure hard drives).
