No more Captain Picard?

From Cinema Confidential, and also reported at Sci Fi Wire and Dark Horizons:

With the disappointing numbers from "Star Trek: Nemesis," Paramount and producer Rick Berman must be scratching their heads trying to figure out how to proceed with another "Star Trek" film. But they're going to have to do so without Patrick Stewart. While "Nemesis" hinted that it would be the last "Star Trek" film to feature the "Next Generation" cast, Stewart confirmed today that he will no longer be a part of the "Star Trek" universe.

In an interview with Lisa Zlotnick, when asked about returning as Captain Picard, Stewart revealed, "I don’t think so. I think the Next Generation is over with. I’ve probably said goodbye to Piccard forever now."

Stay tuned for more from Patrick Stewart, as he gears up as Professor X in "X2: X-Men United."

This isn't too surprising, but this is probably one of the saddest endings of Star Trek. After all, when the series TNG ended, we knew there would be movies, and so there was always the promise of bigger and better. It looks like that promise will go unfulfilled. The recent Star Trek movies have been okay, but the best of Star Trek remains in individual episodes.

But then again, this may be for the best. If there is another TNG-era movie, it will have a mixed cast, and that may be just what the movies need.

I think the well has just gone dry for Next Generation films. They haven't done a really good Star Trek film in a while and I bet he was just getting tired of them. It's a shame because he is a very good actor and is normally what made the last couple of movies actually worth watching. Maybe this will be a wake up call for the property to try something new.

Okay, people around here know I'm a pretty big Trek supporter...

But this choice is fine by me. Stewart hasn't had a really good Trek movie script to work with yet. First Contact wasn't bad but it wasn't close to any of the good or even decent original Trek films. The 3 I have seen of the TNG films (haven't seen Nemesis yet) have felt like just extensions of the show rather than than the larger-the-show flicks they should have been.

So rather than harp on it more than I already have, I'll just agree with jdavis and say that Paramount needs to up the quality of any future Trek motion pictures. Get Nick Meyer back or some other director who can do justice to the francise...

I wish I could comment, but then I'd be branded as an "insipid whiner." :p

So, I'll just agree with John Crichton.

OK. I'm sorry. I take it back.

Besides, I agree with all of you anyway... :p

Hmmm...

Should we all hold hands around the campfire? Then burn copies of the newest Trek movies while we toast marshmellows. Altho the marshmellows may not be too tasty with all that burning plastic and silicon...

:D

Hm.

It isn't as if "I don't think so" and "probably" are horribly strong language rejecting the idea out of hand. Seems more like he's not expecting it, but leaving the option open.

If the money were right he would probably return.
I think they are going in another direction anyway as was hinted in the last film "Nemisis"

I think B&B are looking at a number of things and rethinking them. This can be good and bad ...only time will tell.
